Spam sucks. I prefer that they be flayed, dipped in an alcohol bath and then slow roasted. Crushing their heads in a vise will also do in a pinch.

Yep spam would stop if it did not work. But there has to be a certain % that respond/buy from the spam or the spammer/seller would stop and try something different. Could be less then 1% but send out 10k or even 100k spams and you make a profit and just send more spam the next day.

I saw this on slashdot this morning and read through it. Very interesting numbers. Removing botnets would be a huge help for sure. Then again, I imagine all the spam from botnets is fairly easy to filter because it shouldn't change to much message from message.

They could be located anywhere. Botnets work by using flaws in the OS / programs to allow the attacker to gain access to a computer. If a certain PC is not fully patched and updated, it could be vulnerable to an attack. Most people who's computers are part of the bot net are unaware that they have been compromised.

Usually computer illiterate people's computers. I know that at least the Storm botnet is a very smart one too, it will detect getting port scanned and probed and release/coordinate a counter attack by the rest of the botnet. Fairly resilient little ah heck composed of a few million computers.

If you click around, you can find a map that shows the sources of the spam, and according to that the US is by far the worst offender. I expect that's primarily because of the high density of computers per capita - I wonder what the map would look like if it were adjusted for that.

Can we do a Shock and Awe campaign on their operators? That's a bombing campaign I would be behind 100%.

Use the Drano instead on those who send spam, delivered intravenously.
On second thought, that'd be a waste of perfectly good organs and blood. Keep them alive as blood and plasma factories, and take a kidney and lung out of each one. Bone marrow donors, that would be nice, too. That way they could give back to society and receive punishment at the same time.

most of these botnets are controlled by the Russian maffia. There were some interesting articles on slashdot and these networks are so intelligent that they can split up their botnet into smaller networks and sell them to the highest bidder. If you have the money you can just go to these guys, buy a million zombies and start your own spamfest

One of the reasons the US is the worst offender is the fact that we have so many different ISP, most of which do not have any decent filters in place.

aye.

They are all on an 82yr old lady's P1-90 in Duluth, along with a copy of every virus or worm ever created. She, and the 2gb HDD, will live for another 72 years thanks to her daily ritual of HGH.

i dont understand how some kid caught with a bag of weed will be thrown in jail, yet a spammer like this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Soloway can cause literally MILLIONS of people annoyance (and lots of quantifiable economic loss) but get virtually nothing. still makes a bunch of money, hires some lawyers, get charges thrown or dismissed somehow, and get off pretty much scot-free in the end. (yeah he was recently indicted but i dont think he'll see prison time)

That's why I always say "never trust a botanist". They'll either spam you or get their pet trees to rape you.

Read that wiki article.

"On March 14, 2008 Robert Soloway reached an agreement with federal prosecutors, two weeks before his scheduled trial on 40 charges. Soloway pleaded guilty to three charges: felony mail fraud, fraud in connection with e-mail, and failing to file a 2005 tax return.[9] In exchange, federal prosecutors dropped all other charges. Soloway faces up to 26 years in prison on the most serious charge, and up to $625,000 total in fines."

26 years and $625k is not 'scot-free.'
