How do you tell whether a LCD monitor is 6-bit or 8-bit? Some monitors dont specify the number of colors it can display.

most sales guys don't know what I'm talking about when I ask this question, so how do u find out looking at the specs? for e.g. sony 23" SDM-P234/B. How do i know from the specs if its 6-bit or 8bit, looking at the specs. I've tried asking the sales ppl, and they don't know.

The manufacturor, not the sales guys. Look at who makes the products, got their website and look for a number to call for products information.

Sony doesn't say if it's 6-bit or 8-bit, but there are tons of reviews on the thing saying the colors look pretty good, so if it is 6-bit they've done a good job and you can't see the dithering.

I would say that the absence of any documentation saying it's an 8-bit panel is pretty ominous, but there are so many good reviews of the thing you can't be sure. Even the full manual doesn't say:

Nearly all LCD panels >17" are 8-bit panels. The 23" Sony is based on a LG-Philips panel and is a 8-bit panel and the specifications are here:

One way to tell is to look at the specs of the monitor, if it says 16.2 million colors or FRC, then it's a 6-bit panel. But a lot of time, the manufacturer's don't really specify it accurately.
