6-bit LCD Panels and Poor Math Skills

Does anybody have any ideas on how the folks selling 6-bit LCD panels are claiming 16.2 million colors? By my calculations, the most colors a 6-bit panel could display is 262,144. This is assuming they are still using only three sub-pixels per pixel.

I'm sure the marketing mathmagicians have something to do with this, but I'm very curious about real-world experiences with 6-bit displays. I am doing some design and I don't want to have any color problems.

Any information is appreciated.

I'm also interested in knowing how these claims are not considered fraudulent. But that's probably another thread.

Dithering. They don't get 16M real colors(your calculations are correct), but it at least makes it look like there are more colors availible. On that note, since you're doing design, stay far away from 6-bit panels for obvious reasons.

yup what he said, so look for 16.7M panels instead of those 16.2M ones.

For anyone who's interested, I ended up purchasing a Samsung 910T. I'm very happy with it. There is one stuck sub-pixel, but it's in a very unobtrusive location.

The response time is 25ms, but video looks smoother on it than it did on the new Sony XBrite 19" which claims a 12ms response time.

Thanks for your input.
