6-8 hours to back up iOS!?

Both me and my father are updating to iOS 4. My father already updated his iPhone 3G (not 3GS) to 4.0. I'm in the process of updating my iPod Touch to 4. Yes I know neither of these will get multitasking. At any rate it took about 8 hours for iTunes to backup my father's iPhone before installing the update and it looks set to take a similar amount of time on mine. What gives!?😱

Are they hooked up through USB hubs? I recall that being a problem early on.

Also, what OS are you using?

Nope this is the front port on my case which is plugged directly into a mobo header.

Home built system or OEM? Newish system or older? Any chance that the front ports are 1.1?

30-40 minutes seems like a long time to just sync. It takes my first gen iPhone something like 5 minutes to do its daily sync. Have you tried doing a full restore? How often does your father sync his?

Home built system. The mobo is an ASUS P5K Premium which only has USB 2.0 headers. Don't know about the physical wires on the front case connected to the header but that shouldn't make a huge difference if they are TRUE USB 2.0 cables or not. Yeah I haven't tried doing a full restore yet. Like I said above I don't sync very often at all. Maybe once a month or so. Same with my fathers.

Well, maybe try a restore, I am not sure what is at play here, it might have to do with the time between syncs. Try a restore from your previous backup, then try updating to 4.0?

I had this exact problem with another USB device. With the first cable I tried, everything was taking forever. I swapped in a true USB 2.0 cable, and the speeds went up 10 fold.

Cables mean a lot for USB 2.

Nowadays when I find any USB cable in my drawer I try it with fast devices. If I get slow speeds I throw it out, so I never have to encounter the problem again with the same cable.

The problem is that it's impossible to tell if a cable meets USB 2 specs just by looking at it. Early USB 1.1 cables should work with USB 2.0, but many don't. Many companies cheaped out, because I guess they felt there was no need to build to correct spec at USB 1.1 speeds.
