Damn good game, I enjoyed all of the games actually that are listed, but Space Marine was just a none stop action packed ride, the entire time I had a grin on my face, and the Thunder Hammer is the best thing ever

I think I might finally pick up Space Marine now or even try out some of the RTS titles, never given them a shot yet.

What one thing should I get for single player. Think the only one I've played before was the bare Dawn of War.

Went for DoW Platinum, lappy can't handle the others after trying the demos. Space Marine is totally awesome, though.

Goddamnit. This is one of those games that has my name written all over it ... and I was super-duperly trying to wait for the summer sales before buying anything.

Space Marine currently downloading... :)

Sales like these cheapens the Warhammer IP, fuck Steam.

Yup, it's entirely Steam's fault that these games are so cheap. Poor THQ/Games Workshop... so many retailers discounting their stuff without asking permission.

It does cheapen Warhammer IP... and all other games IP. For me.

*As a consumer, I'm not going to spent $49.95 on PC games anymore.
The days of me paying retail are over. Steam has trained me.

It's up to the publishers to recognize that and push that into their numbers.

*I'm sure there will still be a game here and there that I'll pay the full money for -- i.e., I actually paid $54.95 for Diablo 3 this year. I wish I hadn't, but I did.

He has a point - it's sort of like how Wal-Mart can greatly expand sales for a company but can also cut their profits to the bone and even put them out of business.

So why not just not sell to Wal-Mart? That can not be viable when they own too much of the distribution.

Publishers are careful to only say nice things about Steam and how grateful they are for all the increased sales, but it often cuts the revenue per title to the bone.

And once that cat's out of the bag, it'd be hard for them to go back to charging $30 for the game they used to get instead of $10 and under $5 on sale.

And it drives customers away from the publishers' sites to Steam. for example, because of Steam, Spiderweb cut the price on all their games on their website - but Avernum 1 is now down to $20, the same game that was $3.39 yesterday on Steam, and lists for $9.99 there. Right now, the five Geneforge games are $45 on their website (down from the $75 I paid, on sale), and are $9.99 on gog.com on sale, $14.99 normal price.

In the short term, companies can make money from the increased sales, but it also has the effect of driving down prices even for companies who don't participate.

It's a tradeoff. Expand the customer base, reduce the prices. However, that can drive down budgets as the market for expensive games dries up.

There aren't many studios who can still sell at the higher price point.

Thing is, there is no 'room in the numbers'. There isn't some 'wasted profits' huge fund to cut. The cuts come from the investment in the game - they're lower quality.

They don't always get it right, like you feel about Diablo III, just like expensive movies don't, but do you really want just a stream of cheap games and movies?

Even if you don't like Diablo III, it did cost a lot to develop. They need the money to pay for big budgets if you want big budget games.

this all assumes valve has exclusive control of steam pricing. after a certain time period, i imagine publishers/studios stop receiving much money because the game is old and costs too much relative to popularity, and that's why they start steam sales.

Exactly. If you're dumping 10-20million into a game, that takes a lot of copies to be profitable when they're selling for $7.50.

The only real alternative for game companies who don't want to race to the bottom is to give us smaller titles that cost less to develop.

I wonder about the new XBOX720 and PS4... how will big companies respond.
i.e., will they go all out and put huge teams on creating multiple launch titles (teams that will have to be larger than normal, because likely the hardware will require more assets )... or might they trim back a bit, and create more, smaller bets on mobile and casual.
Small mobile and casual games are certainly more miss than hit, but a singular hit can create as much coin as a big AAA console title.

That's always been the case.

I don't know how much quicker big titles are driven down nowadays, but I imagine it's faster than 10 years ago.

Combined with the knowledge that if I wait 3 months I'll save 75%, it has to have a bruising effect on the publishers bottom line.

I'm interested in the giant DLC pack, but only if I can part it out. Anybody know if I can do this?

While true to some extent, a lot of these games that nose dive down 75% in 3 months had no business being released with their premium price tag either and the publisher is looking to make a quick buck one people that want it as soon as possible.

Space Marine is a very good game. Kind of stinks that the online gameplay dwindled down but it was fun for a while.

Had been waiting for this series to go on sale again. Time to give it a try.

Buy them all or select carefully? Prefer single player offline.

I got space marine free with PSN plus, so I won't be picking it up. I was thinking about completing my DoW collection with Soulstorm and Retribution. Damn does retribution have a million DLC packs or what!

Storm Bolter for me.

As a huge Warhammer 40k fiction reader I felt that they gave the Bolter weapons quite a good representation... but the Storm Bolter was just superb!
