Just spoke with our family down there, everybody is fine but kinda shaken up. We tried calling all day yesterday but the phones were all tied up. We got through once for a second yesterday, they said they are fine, but the line didn't last long. Got more info today. They live on the side of a mountain overlooking San Jose Valley (Escazu), about 20 miles away from the epicenter. They get earthquakes all the time down there, but very rarely this strong.
Epicenter was near the La Paz waterfalls, on the side of Poas volcano, very popular tourist area. There are some beautiful hotels right at the falls, Peace Lodge for one, sounds like it was destroyed from the reports with hundreds stranded.
So far, 14 dead, 22 missing - link 🙁
Costa Rica is a beautiful country, but is definitely not up to standards regarding building codes so a 6+ is pretty rough down there.
Anyway, figured I would post this here. Having been down there many times, I know its a very popular place for US tourists so if anyone family members that are stranded or haven't heard from yet, please let me know. I might be able to help out.
