5v-7v-12v fan controller?

pctwo, I think it's time you enable your profile 😉 It makes it easyer to offer sources.

The best way is to just buy a Sunbeam Rheobus for <$10. You need a 5.25"bay for installation. It will offer control for 0 to 12V.

Another way: Use a DPDT switch for selecting 5 or 12V. If 12V is too much, use OHM's Law to figure out the resistor quality to be used to drop the 12V to the desired voltage.
http://www.silentpcreview.com/ >Fans & Controlls>5 to 12V mod. A review of the Sunbeam Rheobus will be found there. I discourage the 7Volt mod you will find there.

Some places have power adapters for fans that are prewired for 5 or 7 volts. Or you can do it yourself. Each drive power connector has 3 different wires: red=5V, yellow=12V and black=ground. To get 12V, just connect normally. To get 5V just wire the red of your fan to the red of the drive connector instead of the yellow. To get 7V, you connect the red of the fan to the yellow (12V) of the power and the black of the fan to the red (5V) of the power connector (the potential difference is 7V). Or you can use a Sunbeam Rheobus or an Aerogate 3 - both can be found for under $10.

Most fans won't run @ 5V. It's also almost impossible to tell which fans will and which won't without testing the particular sample you have, some Nexus oranges will run @ 5V, some won't.

My personal feelings are that if you want to run your fans that low you should have bought slower fans in the first place.

But good luck anyway.

Nexus fans have internal dropping resistors. If you buy the Yate Loon equivalent, they will all run down to 5V.
