I almost purchased one, but then though about the limited data on a smaller manufacturer of HDD like Toshiba, much less their latest 5TB based on 4 1.25TB platters. Good price though.

Shipping and tax added on $25 for me. Unless you really need 5TB in a single external drive, there are better deals to be had, plus you won't have to wait over 2 weeks for it to arrive. I found a 4TB WD My Book external for $170 after tax from BestBuy a few days ago. Newegg had it for the same $160 price without tax, but I needed it quickly.

I don't think it's as much "too many eggs in one basket" as much as the first available drive with 1.25TB platters. In that respect, the price is very competitive. This Toshiba 5TB drive will likely force Seagate's hand to release their 1.25TB drives, which is also a good thing.

Although the latest generation of 4 1TB platter drives actually has been robust. So who's the first to be a guinea pig for these latest drives? I personally wouldn't use them for any critical applications, but might eventually give them a shot in an HTPC or as a non-critical backup for music and movies.

How do you know it's 4x1.25TB platters? I can't find anything on google supporting 1.25TB platters.

This 5TB drive uses SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) with densities increased by 25% to 1.25TB per platter. The next generation (6TB and beyond) are helium based.

Seagate will release their SMR drives next.

http://www.seagate.com/about/newsro...ngled-magnetic-recording-milestone-pr-master/

“With SMR technology, Seagate is on track to improve areal density by up to 25 percent or 1.25TB per disk, delivering hard drives with the lowest cost per gigabyte and reaching capacities of 5TB and beyond.”
