My WRT54G running great firmware just died...made a whistling sound I don't know how possible.
I bought a WRT320N to replace it. Bought a WMP600N card to also be 'dual'. I was hoping for a true dual on the router side of things, but no one had one in stock.
Figured I'd give 5GHz a try.
Signal strength a measured 12 feet from the device was 216-270Mbps but only Weak (common) to Good and fluctuated. With my router hanging down out of the closet.
Tried 2.4GHz and Auto: 20/40MHz...I get a constant 243-270Mbps and only Very Good(rare) to Excellent mostly locked on Excellent. With my router back up in top of the closet.
Now in defense my PC is located under a stainless steel table. Metal seems to be a problem at 5GHz. Still I wasn't expecting so much this close. I never bothered testing in our family room at the same distance but only through 1 drywall wall with metal studs (backed with 2x4) and a concrete wall as my main PC is in the location with the problem.
I am a bit disappointed, but at the same time it's not affecting me. I will usually only pick up a neighbor's network rarely and only 1 bar. My phone is 800MHz, we don't have other 2.4GHz stuff.
My wife fileshares to my PC for her camera downloads. Mostly she uses ethernet, but occasionally she will be wireless and want to grab some pics. This will be 5x as fast at least.
