congratulations, ambient temp at the moment if i wanted to do what you were doing is only -2c here, not good enough for that kind of OC. would love to see what you could get with a better cooling solution (h50 is okay but not great)

Ok, I know this is IMPRESSIVE but, and this is a total OC newb question. What is the potential benefit of running that fast all the time?

Are there games or programs out now that would change DRAMATICALLY if they could run on a 5 GHz computer all the time for prolonged periods...

At what point is OCing PRACTICAL vs "I did it, look at the benchmark?"

Again, NOT being a smart ass here, asking a legit question to LEARN...

Thanks!

there is no real use in games for a CPU clocked that high (as most games are GPU bottlenecked) if you are doing some video encoding and such you could see an increase however this is NOT a 24/7 clock speed in any stretch of the imagination. If you could get this to run 24/7 stable then you have VERY expensive cooling, but its practical uses are limited.

Thanks for the reply...

How long do you think your RIG can run at that speed?

Again, congrats on getting it that fast!

Slappa focuses on suicide runs on his CPU. These are not 24/7 OCs he run. He does this for fun as a hobby. Also nice work Slappa I loved your Dry Ice video a lot.

4.2 is very doable 24/7, I had one. But my current motherboard is not as good. I think 4.5 on a great motherboard and cooling would be the best 24/7 full load stable.

NOTE: That is a guess based on what I have seen.

And yes many apps can use more speed and more cores....

Lightroom.

And presumably raytracers, etc.

LOL. Stuff that .001% of the population uses. That is true, of course.

I think just about anything would benefit, but when you get down to it I think the deltas between an OC'd 4GHZ and an OC'd 5 GHz are not that much. Especially given the effort and cost it takes to get that last 20% CPU. Doesn't help you boot much faster. Disk speeds don't matter either. With the new GPUs, some games are CPU-limited again (based on reviews from this site) so that would probably give a significant improvement - maybe even a few FPS!

Thanks guys.

To the human eye, games won't improve much after 4-4.5GHz
Measured by FPS or benchmark, as long as the game is not GPU limited, then yes it helps
