McBain Camera in Edmonton, AB, Canada has the 5D Mark II body for $2799 CDN. Because they're in Alberta, there's no provincial sales tax. They seem to offer shipping to the United States.

Don't pre-orders charge credit cards on shipment? By the time it ships, the CAD/USD exchange rate might have flipped back $0.10 already, or not.

CAD is lower now than it's been in a while because the USD is relatively high, but this won't necessarily last. If you can actually buy the CAD now and do the transaction in CAD, you might benefit.

It should be released within the next few weeks, so we'll see how it comes out. Having said that, I'm holding on to my original 5D. :) I love the thing and the new one isn't a justified upgrade for me.

That's a good point, but does American law apply internationally? My use of a credit card in offshore areas usually involves the billing in local currency. Then the conversion to US dollars takes place at the credit card's host, usually some bank in the US. The actual dollar amount is then based on the exchange rate at the time of that conversion.

Options contracts usually refer to puts and calls in the financial markets.

buy an option on CA$. have the expiration date sufficiently far out that it'll cover your purchase date, and have the strike price such that you don't lose money if the canadian dollar goes 1:1 again.

no idea if anyone will sell you an option for that small amount.

how many times would you have to ship the camera back to canadia for warranty service before it becomes a losing proposition?

Good point . . . but, by the same token, I have had at least 14 cameras over the last 50 years and have never had to ship any of them anywhere for warranty service. But, if you treat your cameras like Fuzzy does, that would definitely be a consideration. :)
