One thing that happens with them is the thermal pads dry out/ get cooked and stop transferring heat away from the VRM's, memory.

This article is discussing overclocking and heat, but the pictures and discussion about the temps these parts can hit are relevant. The circled pads are the vrm's.
Dual gpu cards are fairly complicated. On what might cause issues.

The best way I know how to disable crossfire is through the use of RadeonPro. If you own a 5970 you are going to need RadeonPro as the crossfire support this year has stunk. If a game doesn't load or work correctly, or you get odd tearing or performance seems really poor then the first thing to try is a custom profile in RadeonPro for the game with crossfire disabled. If it fixes the problem then you know its just another game that doesn't work in crossfire.

You'll also want to be on the latest drivers at all times. When it comes to games if its just been released and support isn't listed in the drivers you'll probably need to wait at least a month for AMD to get around to adding the profile. RadeonPro can bridge the gap as many games can work with AFR so try that first.

couldn't you run the original ut in dx or opengl?did you go to widescreengaming and see if you can modify the game ini. to run higher resolution?i think 1024x768 was the highest the game would allow.i tried ut2003 and crossfire works and no freezes
