5970 - 10fps... hmmm

So, I got me a 5970 - only drivers I could get to work are the Beta 5 drivers, provided on the disk that came with the card.

Catalyst Manager would not install correctly, had no control on the Jet Engine fan.

Then, running MSI FPS tool - ( I got with my 5770 ) COD Mod Warfare 2 - 12.fps Max.
Same with COD WOW - 15.fps was the most I got - stuttering, visual distortion. I don't want to conclude the card is bad, but, I am getting that feeling.

Anyways, any 5970 users with thoughts, or anyone else?

Running a X4 620, 8 gigs ram, 1920 X 1080 at 47" - physical resource wise, I have no issues.

I uninstalled all drivers, put my 5770 back, re-installed drivers for this card.
COD Modern Warfare, same as before the 5970 - between 30 -50.fps, COD WOW, around the same. Smooth as butter. I'm kind of stumped.

thoughts?

I installed MSI Afterburner to get control of the fans for my 5870. Not sure about the other issues, but CCC not working with the fans seems to be a common thing.

The latest drivers from the website won't work?

Obligatory:
PSU?

I'm using a Corsair 750 - shouldn't be an issue...but hey u never know.

Yeah, downloaded 9.11 Drivers from the Guru and then tried AMD - no difference, they work fine for the 5770 however.

the 9.11 are the 3.00.750 - the Beta 5 Drivers from AMD specifically for the 5970 are the 3.00.745.

The card recognizes those drivers only, then I get my great 10 - 15fps.
Now, I am running OS Win Srv 2K8 R2 - its Win 7, so that should not be an issue. Yes, I have ensured I downloaded the correct drivers, 64bit.

I use Driver Sweeper - got to safe mode, clean again - ensure all is cleaned.

I just dont know...

Yeah, I was trying to use the MSI Afterburner, would allow me to control the cards clock & memory, but not the fan..

They aren't the same thing. Try using a consumer os.

Yeah Clock speeds read fine - GPU-Z reads fine as well..

OS wise, I have not had any issue with any other video card / Driver. 5770 works just fine, prior to that a 8800Gt.. not convinced its an OS issue..

WaitingForNehalem is right.

Server 2008 is NOT Vista for drivers. If you are lucky, Vista 64 drivers *MAY* work in server 2008...but server software is NOT a consumer OS. On the ATI main page, as you select the driver for your product, the drop down for supported OS does NOT include Server 2008 or SBS 2008.

I am curious...what are you looking to accomplish with this video card in SBS 2008?

I see your point, however I wouldn't say *MAY* work in Srvr 08', as until this issue, I had not seen an issue with Win 7 Drivers on Srv 2008 R2. Yes, you could be right, but I think that I would see a consistent theme with any Graphics Card / driver association, under this OS. That's just me.

As far as accomplishing, its my Srv / desktop PC. Multi purpose..

Yes it is. Vista drivers will work fine most of the time on Server 2008. Same with W7 and Server2008R2

Edited.

They were not designed for Server 2008, so while it shares much of it's code from Win 7, it is not the same and there is the possibility of conflicts, especially on beta drivers.

Yep...although they share code...they are NOT the same OS. Same was true with Server 2003 and XP. and stretches back to Win 2000 and Server 2000.

I have had devices that have Vista drivers that don't work with Server 2008...but it is rare.

As part of the troubleshooting process...you can't gloss over the fact that the drivers don't support the OS being used :)

HTH.

Actually it changed with 2008 R2 and W7: during the last Microsoft 2008 R2 demo MS explicitly encouraged us to use W7 drivers if 2008 R2 isn't available saying they are interchangeable.

Yeah...I have heard the same thing..but just because MS says it...doesn't make it a law of operating system thermodynamics ;)

As a Microsoft Partner...I have to laugh about MS declaring all 3rd party vendor drivers for W7 as compatible with Server 2008. So there must be a team of MS employees watching over all 3rd party vendors to make sure every driver revision for Win 7 64 also works on Server 2008? Really? Maybe I still haven't moved on from all the Vista driver issues yet...

Besides...this thread is here because of the driver issues and incompatibility. Maybe ATI/AMD will get it ironed out...but not today ;(

Have you tried different games? Or even a 3DMark? If CF works in other games but not in MW2 then you know it's the drivers.

As a supposed "Microsoft Partner" (last time I checked Partner Program was for companies, not personnel) you should know better: it has nothing to do with "MS declaring all 3rd party vendor drivers for W7" - it's about WHQL W7 drivers will work on 2008 R2 and whatever I installed so far they do work, period.
