For the cost of a better heatsink and a 5xxx card, the 9800 Pro would be cheaper and still destroy your card.

It's really baffling how the FX series sold at all, given its utterly abysmal performance for the majority of its time. In the last few months it's made gains, but not enough, and with the release of the new generation it hardly matters now anyway.

Buy an x800 XT, then brag about your card.

Bah.
There was nothing wrong with the FX series for 99.999% of the games out there, and the only reason anyone can "brag" about X800XTs is ATI can't seem to make more than 10/month. It's not like it's a high ticket item anyone with a job couldn't buy.

but I'm sure you can agree that running the game at 50-60fps with no dips below 40 with AA and AF on is plenty acceptable, no?
That will not be happening unless you have a R420 or NV40.

I get 60 FPS average in the Pier demo on my 9700 Pro. Do you know what the lowest score I've ever seen in the game is?

8 FPS.

Indoors with the flashlight will kill just about anything out there.

LOL- this nut keeps PMing that I am "jealous" of his 5900XT, when I have a better card (6800NU), my four year old has a better card upstairs (5800U), and I could buy a 5900XT 10 miles down the road without thinking twice about it.

post the PM's!

OK-

rollo your just jealous of my 5900XT

my response:
Why would I be jealous of your 5900XT? I have a 6800NU, a much better card? For that matter, I have enough money to buy any video card I want, so I don't have to be jealous of any of them?

his response:
yes still your jealous of my 5900XT

I've truly been through it all on the boards:
Called a nVidiot during a couple years I used ATI cards almost exclusively, now told I'm jealous of cards that aren't even as good as the ones I own.

How many 6800U's is nVidia pumping out per month? 9? 11?

Wtf is an R420? :p
Flashlights indoors, most definitely. I agree.
Typically, I used Cryvision instead, in which the game seems to run at a slightly better framerate when it's on. I rarely used the flashlight. My game has only bogged down below 40fps a few times, and I'm almost at the Volcano level. Is this not acceptable?
It is more than enough for me, and it would be for others out there as well.
Yes, not everyone, but a healthy chunk of people.

mynewrigissick you're wayyyyy off the reservation if you think your card can run farcry *good* on high details.

My card, a better one, a 5900NU, overclcoked 520/968, 6900 3dmarks, way past 5950 ultra levels, is unacceptable play with details on high. And this is at 11x8. No way will a stock XT with crappy 2.8 ns ram even come close to running this game the way you describe.

Anyway your
thread was good a laugh at least.:)

Other than speed with AA/AF anyway. Look at the very VGA charts you linked to, when the 9700 nonpro beats the 5950 handily 3/3 times something is seriously wrong.

I think the problem with the XTPE is memory chips. With 2.0 ns chips in short supply, 1.6 ns chips must be worse. It's not like we've seen Ultra Extremes available; EVGA sells 5 a week.

actually 35fps.. with everything to medium..
i am even running it at 10x7 the highest i can get is 12x10., limited by LCD.

when i play the game , i acutally need to overclock everything to get all the eye candies enabled but still playing at 10x7 without aa/af

I'll see your GF3Ti200 with an ATI Rage Fury Maxx and a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. :D I'm sure I've also got a 512k trident card sitting around here somewhere. :p

I have a similar setup to yours. You should be getting more performance than now in Far Cry. I'm wondering if the CPU is throttling itself down once it reaches its threshold temperature. There is an article at X-Bits where it shows P4 CPU's throttling down and cutting game performance by greater than 50%!

If so, you may need a better cooling solution. If you go watercooling, I will recommend that you try OC'ing the Prescott. Otherwise, you better not.
