5900U -> 5950U

Would a 5900U at 475/950 perform identically? (as to a stock NV38 aka 5950?)

CompUSSR has them (SKU number 307297 for $499) so if this is the case there is no point in buying one. Of course that cooler is slick! 😛

I have a 5900U that does 522/968 when using the auto check settings! Aquamark scores are a hair under 50k on a dual Xeon 2.66GHz with dual channel ECC. (2100) 🙂

Cheers!

Completely OT here but what is the normal usage of the above quoted computer? It looks like a server but you have a gaming GPU installed in it... 🙂

Most of the time it's busy with crunching. We have two of EVERYTHING so I cannot possibly let that AGP slot go to waste. 🙂

So yes, it's a worksatan with a general purpose video card.

Cheers!

I think autodetect tests stability in 2D
my autodetect detects 530/1GHz... while my card can't run anywhere close to that high stabily in gams... I can only run it at 510/950 max.. and even that's unstable...

I dought there are any major architectural changes if any simply because ATI has only done slight modifications to their GPU. I would expect Nvidia to be concentrating on their next GPU rather than a 6 month refresh product. Overclocked to the 5950U levels should give performance within 3% or less, which in most cases is negligible.

From all I'm seeing on the web, that seems to be correct. You already have a 5900U? Upgrading now would get you more performance, but you wouldn't be able to tell unless you benchmarked.

Of course, you'd be helping the economy more, so yeah, go ahead and get that 5950U. 🙂

Then where exactly should he be posting? Video cards are included in general hardware.

I crap on you.

Shuttleteam, I don't think there was any major changes in the core, just some extra clock speed in the core and memory.

No it tests 3D...

The fanspeed increases when the tests are run just like when a 3D app is launched.

That is strange because I find the auto setting to be conservative. I can get nearly 30 MHz MORE from memory and 20-25 MHz more from VPU core before anomalies begin to occur. Funny thing is 3D Mark can be looped (1600x1200 w/4XAA etc.) all night without any problems yet the Matrox Reef Demo will show anomalies (not crash hard or lock the machine--just pause for 10 sec at a time) at the same frequency. (545/1GHz)

The system has a plenum which brings plenty of coolth to the bottom of the system so temperature is not a factor.

A NV38 may be able to O/C further (550/1000?) quite possibly at the expense of noise. The cooler looks quite mean on that card.

Cheers!

we have specific boards for specific topics. we have a video forum, cpu forum, motherboard forum. general forum is used when none of those applies, like harddrive, soundcard, monitor, etc...

Yeah because there's to be no discussion of CPU's or Vid Cards in General Hardware.

What are you contributing to the thread again? oh, nothing? thats right.... please stop posting in it.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. It seems that the new 5700 is going to have architectural changes from the 5600U, so I suppose there's a chance they're will be changes in the 5950, but I seriously doubt it. I'd stick with your 5900U for this generation.
