I have a P4 2.2Ghz system right now. 1GB of DDR.

Would I be better off with a plain 6800 or a 5900 Ultra?

6800 by a long way. 9800pro is a better bang for the buck in comparison to the 5900 ultra

6800 beats the 5900U regardless of price. When you factor in the price the 6800 gets even better :D

My concern was the 6800 with 128MB vs. the 5900 ultra with 256MB.
9800 Pro with 256MB might be an option as well.

Maybe the 256MB of ram isn't that big of a deal.

I could get a used 5900 ultra for $220 or a 6800 for ~$272. Damn I hate these decisions.

5900 ultra is not nearly worth 220, nevermind a used one. A used 9800pro off the the fs/ft fourm will beat it in most games and be very close in others. you can get that for ~185 shipped. or a new one for 194!!! A 9800pro will beat a 5900u for price/proformace.

Whatever you do, don't buy the 5900ultra. Very overpriced.

For those prices buy the 6800nu

The amount of ram won't matter on a 5900U.

6800, it's a no brainer. The whole FX line is not up to snuff for any of the new games out and on the way if you want to enjoy the IQ that is being offered by them. Certainly you can play them all fine, but with reduced quality and often an older DX path E.G. HL2. After using my 5800U@525/1050 on A64@2.4ghz in FarCry, I concluded the FX series is a very poor choice for anything using PS2 or better from here on out with IQ in mind.
