Yep looks like i took a gamble and i got the better card the Geforce FX 5900 blows the ATI cards and even the new 9800 XT softly away in Homeworld2 and thats all i care about. because its out now i own it i play it and now i know ive got the best videocard too run it on so ..... ;) woohoo !!!

As for HL2 i'm going to wait for the Natural Selection mod too come out for it
and then i'll see how my GF FX5900 runs it and if its not playable then i'll grab the card that does give playable rates.
As for the game itself i dont really care about Half-Life2 single player......... i just wanna play the online mods. NS, TFC, CS, DOD, ... ALL will be awsome. i'm sure most of you guys are thinking the same :) Half-Life was never really anything Special but those mods rocked and still do.

Bring on the mods!!!

so you have to justify your purchase to us?

Why? Why should we be happy for you? If you're happy is that not all that matters because it was YOUR money? It's not like you are thanking us for buying your card for you.

I don't understand

I also disagree about HL single player. I found it a very engrosing experience with lots of interaction in the environment

Good choice man. If Homeworld 2 is all that matters to you, like you say, then you picked the right card. I would have done the same thing.

58fps vs 49fps in Benchmark1 and 45fps vs 33fps in Benchmark 2. Less with eye candy turned on... pwnage!!!!! . I sure hope that's the only new game you ever play on that card before upgrading ;).

Edit: if you're happy with your purchase, more power to you. That's all fine and good but you turn yourself into flaimbait with ambiguous comments like "Geforce FX 5900 Faster then Radeon 9800 XT !"

Hehe, you do realize that ATI can easily bring that performance up with some minor driver tweaks? Whereas Nvidia's poor performance can only be remedied by either redesigning the chip itself or degrading image quality.

Edit - One more thing, if you've got the cash to plunk down 500 dollars an FX5900 now and another 500 in a few months, more power to you, you drive the tech economy. :D

5900 Ultra and 5900 Non ultra are the same thing ... 50Mhz on the core and an extra 128MB ram doesnt do didly for the card :) unless running higher rez

Do you have a link to those benchmarks, or are you just interpolating? I've seen benches that showed the ultra slower (slightly) at 1024x768, but incrementally faster at 1280x1024 and up.

5900 has boat loads of bandwidth for all the textures and it also has better drivers suited for the game with good IQ.

Never played the game myself, but I'm happy my ATI peforms better with aa/af in Generals Zero Hour. I'm a big time c&C fan! The 5900 would of faired good if they had drivers suited for such a game.

I think Homeworld 2 is one of those new games that use's multitexturing so the 4x2 on the GforceFX is working better then the 8x1 on the ATI

Does it even matter in that game? I never get any slowdowns with my 8500LE, which means it always stays above 40 for me, which means that the current cards should all stay above 60 or something...

I dont know if i'm the only one who feels this way but there is ABSOLUTELY NO GAME I await more eagerly than the single player of half-life 2! ;) (hopefully the mods will be great as well)

I really enjoyed the first half-life single player game as it was really the first with a rewarding single player FPS experience of its time (there was a reason for all those "Game of the Year" awards from virtually every gaming publication in existance). :p

Doom 3 is about the only other thing that even comes close and that just more for the "freak-you-out-scary" factor.

HL2 looks to me as one of the first single player FPS where you actually can make some intelligent choices that affect how things get done (as well as having killer AI, sweet sweet scripting, unbelievable physics, and insane eye candy... have to stop myself getting to worked up thinking about it  )

p.s. On just one showing of the HL2 blink videos to a few of my friends they have decided to have me build them pc's JUST so they can play the game, lol...

First of all, I'm a ATI lover (so you will notice my opinion is a bit biased:D). Second of all, the 5900 Ultra beats the 9800 XT but sadly, the 5900 doesn't. I base my opinion off of This information. Don't get me wrong though, both are great cards.
EDIT: Just read one of many posts above. So that's why the 5900 didn't show up in the benchmark I was looking at. I also agree with Bateluer, ATI cards just need the right drivers (such as the Omega drivers) and they kick serious butt.

-SirDude

P.S. I also want to get Half Life 2, looks sweeeeeet :)

Luckily for all concerned, HL2 seems to be running much better on nVidia these days:
Waiting for the plaintive wails of "The mixed mode will be butt ugly! Valve wants to isolate their game from over half of their market to prove us all right in our bbs flames!

i said it once, i'll say it again: i doubt valve will have any trouble selling HL2

THose benchies are fallacious-Nvidia lowered IQ in HL2 as the massive devs have reported here:

www.massiveinfofaqdev.net

THese days I don't trust any benchmark results from nvidia.

I'd believe you if you could run a 9800PRO on the exact same system and use FRAPS to record average, min, and max fps.

The only other single player game I consider on par with Half Life for immersive game play --- Undying.

I'm really happy HL2 is working well on the FX5900. People who spent $300 and up on that card deserve playable framerates, and they now will get to enjoy this (hopefully) ground-breaking game.

As a side note, isn't it funny how the Nvidia "supporters" now think HL2 won't be so bad anymore, eh? ;)
