5890 Rumors?

Hey everyone,
In every Fermi thread someone inevitably posts "ATI will release the 5890". I realize I have not seen much in the way of leaks talking about 5890 since september. Has anyone got any info they would like to share, such as clock speed or amount of memory? Should we expect 2gb on the 5890? I've also heard a lot about the 5870 E6 (the 6 head eyefinity version), is that going to be the equivalent card or do you think they will have an actual 5890?

It depends on how well Fermi does. The 4890 made more sense for its generation than a 5890 seems to be for this one.

We also need to keep in mind it was a good ~9 months between the 4870's release and the 4890...

If we do see a 5890, I'd wager on a late spring / early summer release.

Again, it really all depends on Fermi. In the near future AMD might not have to do anything if the supply numbers for Fermi are as low as the rumors suggest, and if the performance is also as low as then even if nVidia can fix supply issues, AMD really only needs to lower prices back to their original MSRP levels. A 5890 really wouldn't be necessary unless nVidia can fix its performance issues and start producing Fermi products that really widens the performance gap - the 4870 was "enough" for the GTX 260/280, but the GTX 260+/275/285 warranted an improved 4870 ala the 4890. If the gap is even smaller this time around I really wouldn't be surprised if we don't see an official 5890.

If ATI does have HD5890 waiting in the wings we probably wouldn't hear about it until it is released (re: HD5xxx is already a successful product line for ATI)

people just assume ATI will release a 5890 eventually

there really hasn't been any type of rumor buildup that a 5890 will be coming

the stuff that will happen is that ATI will release a 5870 6 DP card, 5770 5 DP, 5870 2 GB, and 5970 4 GB

Well the 5890 would probably use the same board layout as the current 5870 (at least for a 1GB model) so if they have the necessary amounts of cores stockpiled they can probably release it really quickly whenever they decide is time.

Though they might not have good enough yields to launch it right now who knows.

I've read that there is no 5890 in the works. I doubt that ATI would just release an OC 5870 and call it a 5890. We're talking GPU here not CPU. ;)

The 4890 is an ''OC'' 4870

Actually it also has a few minor tweaks, but yeah, it's basically the same.

Also the difference between most high end vs mid-high used to be that it was just a lower clocked version of the top card.
That's changed a bit recently due to the who harvesting for greater yields thing that seems to happen more now than it used to, but the GF4, Radeon 9x00, etc were all just clock speed differentiated.

Wasn't the 8800Ultra just an overclocked 8800GTX? Did the HD3850 have any disabled units vs the HD3870?

Releasing a product which is "just" an 'overclocked' version isn't anything hugely new. Even in the GPU world.

I suppose its safe to say then that if Fermi does well ATI will probably release a "5890" or equivalent upclocked card. And if Fermi does poorly they will probably leave it as is, with maybe a price drop?
