Hello World, I would like to buy a new ATI card for myself. Most of my friends say that 5870 is a good card. Do you guys have any advice? Could you recommend me what brand is better? BTW, few month ago,I heard that GTX260 have Lightening Edition and SuperOverClock Editon. Are they good? Compare 5870 with these two cards, which side is better? Thx a lot
My system:
CPU: i5-750
MB:GA-P55-UD5
Memory: PATRIOT 1600MHz (9-9-9-24)
Screen: Samsung SyncMaster 2233 RZ

Well there's a big price and performance difference between the two cards. Don't you have a budget???

seriously you're comparing a midrange card to a top of the line card.
5870 is currently the most powerful single gpu card. Roughly $400 probably about twice as fast as a single GTX 260.

GTX 260 is a midrange card that competes with the 5770. $180? These are a bit overpriced. If you're looking for good performance at this price range I'd go with a 4890 if you can find one. I saw a refurb for $125 that will be about 30% faster than this card.

But yeh what games do you want to play and at what resolution? Your system looks like it can handle a 5870 no problem if it's in your budget.

5870 would be a much better choice. better performance, low power use at idle, lower heat. it just costs more.

The GTX260 holds no chance against the 5870 (performance wise).
They aren't on the same level.

Damn... I just looked at Newegg, GTX260's start at $215, that's pretty overpriced. On the other hand, the 5870 is a much faster part but also starts in the upper $300 range, very near $400. The performance is there, but you pay for it.

If you want to not spend $400, but want more performance than a GTX260 a good option might be the Radeon 5850. 5850's start around $310, it'll out perform the GTX260 by a good amount but saves you a good chunk of change over the 5870. Just a thought.

The two cards are in completely different categories from a price and performance standard. That said, I just bought a Gigabyte GTX Super Overclock a week ago and I'm very happy with it. Very fast for a GTX 260 (sits between a GTX 275 and GTX 285 in performance, should beat an HD 5830 in many games). Gigabyte did a first rate job on the chip binning and fabrication - much better components than a regular GTX 260. I have just one game that's DX10 supported and don't see any DX11 games in development that I want, so that's not a concern for at least a year.

If your still gaming at 1650x1050 on that 22 inch monitor do not buy a 5870.

If you can find a gtx 260 for about 200$, I'd say go for that. Most overclock past gtx 275 speeds, and really thats all you need.

If you have the extra money I'd suggest a 5850 ,but they are 318$ shipped and not worth 118$ over a gtx 260 @ 1650x1050.

In the same vein, a $145 5770 should be able to handle 1650x1050 resolution gaming since it performs about the same as a GTX260. Even more money saved and you can at least watch a slide show of "My DX11 Gaming Experience" once DX11 games become more common. Fairly quiet and not very power hungry card too.

5850 would be great (I agree re: buying one over a 5750 for bang/buck reasons) but you can get by with a 260 or 5770.
