5870 temps when gaming

what temp range should my 5870 (single card) be when doing some heavy gaming?...I'm just not sure how high to turn up the video card fan...40% usually is where I can barely hear the fan but anything above and it starts to get noticable...idle temps usually are around 37...what's the max safe temps?

Unless you have poor airflow in your case your card ought to operate just fine on auto fan.
Load temps on that card of high 60s or so are normal...what temps are you seeing whist gaming?

I'd say high 60s are a bit optimistic. On default fan settings it should be about 80C or so. You probably don't need to start worrying until it gets to be low 90s or so.

my case seems to have good airflow...2 front intakes, 2 additional intakes in the middle over the video card area, 1 exhaust in the back and 1 top exhaust blowhole...I'm using the stock ATI 5870 cooler (not overclocked)

don't really trust the auto-fan so I switched to the manual control when gaming...idle temps are fine in the mid 30'sC...when playing Metro 2033 I think it went up into the 60's so I was thinking about cranking the fan up to higher speeds

Stick with auto fan,it works fine with the stock cooler.
Cypress is a decently cool running chip, you needn't worry about overheating in my opinion.
