5870 Issue

I turned on my computer today, an i7 930 OC'd at 4.01 (survived a 16 hour stress test), left the room, came back about 10 minutes later and saw a blank green screen.

I've done some searching online and apparently this is attributed to the graphics card? I have an XFX 5870 reference 1GB card and bought it less than a month ago. I haven't overclocked or overvolted it.

I'm using the newest Catalyst drivers, 10.5, and haven't had a problem yet. Any ideas?

Well, 10.6 drivers came out last week. Give those a shot. That way if it still happens at least you can rule out drivers.

I thought it was well known that there is an issue with 10.6 and Bad Company 2. I believe there is even a hotfix for this.

The only 'issue' was a long load time between levels which AMD implemented a hotfix for a few months ago, it has since been included in the monthly release.

There are still issues with the 10.6 driver and BF BC2

What are they? Did not come across any in the 10.6 thread. There was one user in the other thread who cannot make use of the BC2 hotfix because there is no mobility installer for a Crossfire'd laptop or if there was it was finicky.

A lot of users with crossfire (and even single I think) 5 series cards saw significant drops in FPS between the 10.5 and 10.6 drivers. A couple over at Hardforum.com saw as much as a 20 FPS decrease with the new 10.6 package.

Edit - In Battlefield: Bad Company 2, that is...

Poor FPS while they stated improved fps. I get screen flickering while menu is transitioning.

It is even mentioned in the BF BC2 thread here on Anandtech..

Seems I didn't pay enough attention to the 10.6 thread, carry on. Wonder if another 'hotfix' will be issued...

When the ATI/AMD twitter accound blew up with people complaining about it, they issued a statement saying they were working on a hotfix for it. So hopefully they can get it done quick. Not a problem for me though...good ol' 4890 😛

AFAIK, until ATi tests with all current games instead of alternate groups, they will continue to break or insert bugs as they release drivers optimised for alternative test sets.
