5870 introduced lag.

I just got an ASUS hd5870 a few weeks ago and have noticed that I've been sucking really bad in cod5 all the sudden. It's like I'm playing with a 400 ping but I have a 30 ping. I can only assume that this is because of some setting in CCC that I know nothing about coming from an nvidia card.

This frame lag is awful. I come keep dying before I come around corners because I'm so many frames behind what is happening. This is not from my monitor because I'm on the same one I had with the nvidia card which didn't exhibit this behavior.

Obligatory question: did you properly uninstall all nVidia drivers and ran driver sweeper utilities before installing your new ATI card?

Obligatory question #2: are you absolutely sure your ISP isn't just having a bad day?

If I am understanding your post right, your issue is that somehow your GPU is rendering stuff slower for you so other players can kill you before you know they are there? It really sounds more like a problem with your connection than anything else.

Doesn't really sound like a graphics issue....more like ISP. Your frame rate should be the most important factor here, if its gone up from your previous build it's probably not anything to do with graphics. Also make sure Vsync is disabled.

I dominate CODMW2 with my Asus hd5870. As the renderer for the frames I fail to see how the graphics card could introduce a framelag itself as by definition the timer starts when the GPU renders the frame, and ends when the monitor receives it.

A possibility would be that you are experiencing low frame rates. Did you change your settings in some extreme manner? Are you hooked up through some kind of weird connection? Is it an issue that is persisting across multiple servers on multiple days? Are you using the monitors native resolution?

If the answer to all of these does not help you find your issue, try hooking up a CRT and running an input lag test to see what occurs. Maybe your monitor is having some issues for one reason or another.

If it were somehow frame lag especially from the render ahead buffer then that's something you may be able to feel just from moving the mouse and seeing how long it takes for the screen to react. You can especially feel this with V-sync enabled. If you can't feel this just from input lag then it's much more likely to be your internet connection instead.

I clearly state that I have a 30ms ping in cod5 which is actually more like 15ms in the real world. I also uninstalled the old driver properly before installing the ATi drivers.

I have reason to suspect that it is being caused by MSI Afterburner.

I researched my monitor also before I bought, and it supposed to get less than 1 frame of input lag.

1) You can have a low ping and still have connection issues like dropped packets.

2) You never said if you are experiences the same issue with other games or is it just specific to COD5.

3) Are you using the latest drivers or not? Also define properly, if you ran just the uninstall; then I highly recommend downloading Driver Sweeper and running it to remove all ATI/Nvidia driver left overs and reinstalling the latest ATI drivers.

4) Why do you suspect if it is MSI Afterburner?

Just being nit picky here but input lag is usually measured in milliseconds not frames.

what is your display scaling set at?

i had problems with buffer lag from anything other than "use monitor's bulit in scaling".

It wasn't packet loss. I know the call of duty engine just like I knew the quake 3 engine. I turned off AA and closed MSI afterburner and it stopped happening. Not sure which one fixed it.

Weird thing is with 4xAA I was still get 125fps, but the weird frame lag. I had a guy on my team spec me and he was asking me why I wasn't reacting to people that were killing me when I came around corners. Either way it's fixed so I'm happy.
