My gigabyte 5870 with newest bios finally idles the clock of the core @ 157mhz but the memory stays at 1200 even though I thought it was supposed to idle @ 300. Does this happen to anyone else or am I totally off base?

If you haven't done it already I'd suggest downloading GPU-Z and extract the bios. Then use Radion Bios Editor to see what the clocks are set to.

The ATI Radeon HD 5870 is AMD’s flagship video card as of writing this. This is the video card that will provide the best gameplay experience currently from its 5800 series GPU. It is a single-GPU dual-slot video card. The Radeon HD 5850 would be the equivalent of a Radeon HD 4850 compared to the 4870. The 5850 comes at a lower price, but still packs a solid punch. In fact, it supports higher specifications than we guessed. It is also a single-GPU dual-slot video card.
Below are the specifications of the Radeon HD 5870 and Radeon HD 5850 compared to a Radeon HD 4870. You will note both GPUs are based on 2nd generation 40nm technology and each contain 2.15 Billion Transistors

Just FYI, this was a bug fixed by the latest F7 Revision Bios available on the gigabyte website.
