So my beloved Powercolor 5870 LCS died and I've been looking for a nice replacement.

Current setup:
PSU: Corsair HX 520 (has 2x6 pin power delivery)
MB: ASUS Z77M pro
CPU: i7-2600K
Case: Silverstone GD05 (max card length 11" / 28cm)

I am pretty budget-constrained so no spending north of 500 EUR this time.

My searching turned up that I could go either with a 780 Ti or a 290X. Note that I want to water cool it as soon as I determine that the card is in working order. I was in fact looking for a watercooled card, but that search only turned up ASUS ROG 780 Poseidon, which is the regular 780, not a Ti. That's not a super-must, but it seems wasteful to buy a card that is inferior from the get-go (plus, I'd have to order it from Germany as it's way too expensive in Slovenia).

Anyway, I'm currently narrowing it down to either:
1. Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB GHz Edition
2. MSI Radeon R9 290X 4GB Twin Frozr Gaming
3. Club 3D Radeon R9 290X 4GB royalAce
4. Inno3D GeForce GTX 970 4GB HerculeZ X2
5. EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB FTW ACX 2.0 (no full-cover block yet http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/)

Note that these particular cards are picked primarily because of their price.
I'm also assuming all of their PCBs (without heat sink) are <= 10.5 inches. Visually this seems to be the case, but only the MSI actually specifies sufficiently short card length. The Gigabyte is by far the most powerful due to its insane overclock. The Inno3D is by far the shortest card :D

Am I on the right track or is there another direction I could explore?
Subquestion: all these cards specify 600W+ PSUs. Can I slip by with my current PSU using a 6 --> 8 pin adapter?

No GTX 970s? I'm having a lot of trouble seeing the site you linked to, both because it's in Slovenian and because I keep getting "No route found" errors.

WOW, this 970 seems like a great contender. It's a bit less powerful than 780 Ti, but has 4GB RAM and a lot smaller card. Added to OP.

Still, that Gigabyte is overclocked to the max, no other card that I buy doesn't seem to stand a chance against it.

oops: this card really sips power comparatively. My current PSU can handle any of these easily.
