I'm thinking of picking up a 5870 since NewEgg has some in stock right now but I'm wondering if my processor will hold me back at all? I have the C2D 6400 OCed to 2.60. Just wanted to get some opinions before I dropped $400. I'm currently running a 4850 for my GPU.

I would say this, using that processor won't allow the 5870 to stretch it's legs and shine. On the other hand, it's not like you're trying to pair it with an Athlon 4400 which would be a complete waste, so I say why not.

It will be just fine.

Bottlenecking by CPU is generally overrated unless the game is more dependent on the CPU than video card and those types of games are very rare.

If your running @ 1900x1200 max details or above it's worth it.
Otherwise get a 5850.

Thanks guys. I'm running 1650x1050 on a 22 inch monitor. I'm starting to upgrade and since the 5870's are tough to get ahold of right now I figure I'd get one while I could. I must have got one of the lasts ones at NewEgg too because its now showing they're sold out again.

On the other hand you can pair that 4850 with an i7 920 and you won't get anything more from it.

So OP, you might not get 100% of that 5870 peak performance, but whatever percentage you get will beat hands down the 4850.

I hope you're getting a new monitor too since I doubt the 4850 is having a hard time at 1650.

Then buy and build your new rig around the 5870 ;). Your 5870 won't hurt your performance in the meantime.

Game detail requirements are growing month-by-month, if you like things with maxed out details your 5870 will be very busy. :)
