5850 Good enough? & Newegg

Greetings, first post on boards so hello to all!

Anyways, I was wanting some comments on my build to see what others thought who may have the same video card.

I went with the 5850 after reading several benchmarks showing a not too wide margin in performance between itself and its big brother the 5870.

My problem is I'm battling the natural "Man Sense" that dictates I have the biggest E Peen on the block when in reality I probably don't need it and its associated higher cost. So, with that said, here I am for some reassurance that the 5850 will pull its weight under my needs and that I shouldn't need any more.

The games I will be playing are MWF2, L4D2, and probably some modern RTS's. Resolution at 1680x1050 (For now) @ Max detail.

My build is as follows;

Asus Radeon 5850
Phenom II X4 955
MSI 790FX-GD70
OCZ Obsidian 4gb 2x2
Antec 300
Raidmax Hybrid 2 RX-730SS 730 Watt

The ram is a little questionable but was included in a combo deal with the mobo and CPU. (Its had some hit and miss reviews)
I could have also gotten a better PSU, but it was a good price and seemed to fit my needs.

Before comments are made I would like to point out that the goal made with myself when I decided I was going to build a new rig was try to build a power house at or under a $1000. This build came in at $1035 once the HD, OS, DVD drive and all that jazz was added. Knowing that my rig would not be top-end I went with a mobo that left tons of room for expansion on later dates.

Your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I used to build my own gaming rigs for years but as soon as i started in the oilfield my gaming went on the wayward side as Ive used a laptop only now for 3 years and I've lost touch with my hardware prowess.

PS.

(Shame on you newegg for jacking the price on the 58xx's to gouge those who are lucky enough to get in on one. I know its business, and a tried and true business tactic, but your supposed to be the gamers go-to place. I watched the price go up on all their 5870's last night alone.)

careful with that raidmax PSU, if you rub it on the carpet it might be DOA. heheh jk :p

I like the build, 5850 gets my vote because of the price/performance ratio and overclocking headroom.

I would pair it with an i7 800/900 though

his 4890 with custom cooler is only $159 shipped AR right now. That is a MUCH better deal than $310 plus shipping on a 5850, especially at only 1680x1050.

What does your post have to do with what I said? I never said the 5850, currently, is the best deal on the market.

But thanks to whoever brought up the power supply. Whatever you do, OP, don't get that power supply. Get a quality power supply. And if this means cutting back on the video card, then so be it. Here are some options:

If you bought a motherboard to be future-proof, then you should get a power supply to do so as well. Of course I'm assuming by future proof you mean adding video cards for a Crossfire setup, and for this you are going to need at the very, very least a quality 600W unit. If you want to overclock as well as go Crossfire, a quality 700W is recommended. Keyword: Quality, and that Raidmax is not quality.

Will the 5850 fit in a Antec 300 case?

Im fairly certain it will. Browsed many a forums to find peeps with a similiar set up and several had 300's with the 5850. As for a 5870 tho, I would start to worry.

As for the psu, it had already been ordered, with that said ill probably just stick it out with the Raidmax until a Xfire setup comes to being in which case Ill order me an Antec. Everything minus the video card arrived today so I'd hate to miss out on some gaming while I wait on an exchange. :)

My choice to go with the 5850 revolved around a lot of things. I didnt see a reason to purchase a card with older architecture if a new one is on the market. And before anyone feels tempted to say so, yes, I do understand there are almost no DX11 titles currently but why not be set up for when a year or two from now there is?

Does suck I got a trash PSU. Wish I had done a little more research on it. :)

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

Nice rig, overkill video card for that resolution, but overkill is better than underkill!

i completely agree with the assessment of PSU choice, and i have to also agree that those are some good quality choices which wont break the bank either. if you look at my build, you will notice that my PSU retails for over $300 at a lot of sites, and yet coolmax makes a 1Kw unit as well for a measily $99

now, a PSU failure is the single biggest threat to every other component in your system, and the quality of it's output can also affect both the TCO (total cost of ownership) of your rig directly, in the form of the cost of power to run it (a better one being more effecient), as well as the stability of your system as a whole, and in some extreme cases overclocking headroom as well. i ask you to also note just how much i spent on the rest of my rig. given how much i spent, i would never dream of connecting those parts to something which could destroy them without any warranty support, and i doubt you would want to do the same. out of the PSUs linked above my particular favorites are the Antec Truepower New PSUs, since they are in a similar class of units to the enermax unit im currently running, in that they're designed with modern PSU demands in mind, providing 99% of their output potential on the 12v rail if needed, and that the quality of said output is outstanding. if you had posted this a week earlier, i could have given you a heads up that frys actually had the 550w TP New on add for $69.99 through yesterday, but it's back up in price now to $88.73

ed: not that newegg reviews hold much salt to me but i read a few which had mention of reviews elsewhere, and poor quality control to units exploding out of the box was abound in the newegg reviews as well as comments i saw posted elsewhere. i would avoid this unit at all costs if you value your hardware

Don't live with the crappy PSU just because you're lazy or don't want to miss out on a few days of gaming. If that thing fails and fries your new components, you're going to be missing a lot more than a few days, not to mention a lot more money. Buying a computer with a crappy PSU is like buying a car with a rubber balloon for an airbag. You hope you never have to test how good it is, but when you do, you don't want it to fail.

Buy a 4890, return the PSU, use the extra money to get something reliable. And don't blame Newegg for the effects of supply and demand. ATi bumped the MSRP by $50 because of manufacturing issues. Newegg isn't gouging anyone.

Ill be ordering a new PSU today to replace this one. I know i shouldnt chance it but im an impatient guy. ;)

Heres what im looking at. Im a big fan of Antec products anyhow.

Update: Scratch that..
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341018

What do you fellas suggest? With the 10% off and the 30$ rebate seems like a sweet deal for a OCZ.
Bleh double scratch that. Got a pretty bad rap at Hardocp. Will probably stick with the above.

If I needed a power supply thats what I'd buy. 750 watts 4 ,25 amp rails, 2, 8pin and 2, 6 pin connectors for 109$ shipped! Some people are complaining about the noise but they also state the rest of there system is silent.
Good choice.
