Hello,

I was wondering if it is worthwhile to replace 2 5850's in crossfire with 1 670. I don't need to worry about any bottlenecks, system is more than enough to power it.

Thoughts? Reasoning?

The most demanding game I play is Battlefield 3 at 1920x1080.

Thanks!

1. you save energy
2. no microstutter

In terms of FPS/performance I don't think there will be much of a difference, probably a minro advantage for the 670 looking at this comaprison:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/598?vs=512 (note single 5850 but you know how well it scales)

(I only have 1 5850 but only a 1680x1050 screen so that mostly still works pretty good)

Besides that I think GPUs are just extremely expensive now so I'm not sure it's a good time to buy.

Note that on 64 player Maps the CPU can be limiting too!!!

Thanks Jaydip, that is an absolutely amazing thread. I don't know why searching didn't show it for me.

I guess I'll be sticking with my 5850's as I do not have issues with stuttering or anything. It is both impressive that my 5850's are still so strong, and a bit depressing that 3 years later, the performance hasn't jumped enough.

Time to pocket the upgrade cash and wait for the 7xx series...

i think the 2gb would make a noticeable difference as BF3 textures in Ultra surpasses the 1gb threshold.

There is no reasoning required. Seeing is believing. You will be glad when you ditch that CF for a GTX 670.

I can confirm that upgrading to a 670 for performance reasons alone is not a good idea. I did it to reduce power use and prepare for a more modern system down the road. My current gaming experience, however, did not change. I still play everything at the same settings and with similar performance.
