5850 a bit warm?

Was thinking of OCing my video card. I mean, it's water cooled, so why not, right? I was playing around with Furmark before OCing though, and my card idles at 65C50C. Seems a bit high, I think. I've read reports of it idling much lower than that with the stock cooler. However, it only goes up to 75C under a stress test. I have an MCW60 on the GPU with the stock heatsink plate over the rest of the card. What are your thoughts? Should I worry?

So idle temps aren't THAT high, but they're still higher thanthe stock cooler, I think. The VCC temps worry me too. Does anyone know which sensor corresponds to what in that app?

65C at idle? what is the temp of the water in the cooler loop? what else you got in your loop? seems high to me but I'm not a water expert.
 
That number turned out to be wrong; I was just reading the starting temperature in Furmark. The ATI tool reports 50C, but that still seems a bit high. Plus the load temps are 75-80C, also about the same as stock.

The water loop itself isn't too hot... I don't have a temperature sensor in the water itself, but my CPU (OC'd i7-860) idles at 33C and hits 55C under LinX load. Loop is reservoir/pump -> 2x120 rad -> cpu -> gpu -> 1x120 rad -> res/pump.
 
65C is pretty high, my 5870CF OC'd 900/1200 idles at 26 under water. =( Maybe your loop is getting some bad flow or restriction. Did you bleed your system properly?
 
I'm almost positive it's not an issue with the water loop. The CPU is fine and there is no air in the loop. The water loop has been running since April.
 
I would personally throw the 1x120 in between the CPU and the GPU, and that would probably drop your temps some, but right now your temps are higher than most air cooling solutions. :hmm: Have you checked the contact between the block and the core?
 
That's how I wanted to set it up originally, but it proved to be a real pain to do without kinking the tubes so I just put it on the bottom. You can see a pic of the machine if you click the "main rig" in my sig. From what I've read, loop order shouldn't really make a big difference anyway.

I guess it's going to come down to taking the thing apart, though I'm pretty confidant that I had it attached very tightly.
 
ATI CCC reports my 5850 temperature as 36C idle. Stock Asus, this is also summer with ambient temperatures 80-90F.

50C idle seems high to me.

My juiced 5850 in sig peeks in the mid 40's on core during extended Furmark runs 30 min. +

My loop is similar to yours. Except my
Single rad is between CPU and GPU.
 
Yeah, turns out it was something related to the waterblock's contact with the GPU. I'm wondering if it may have been the cooling paste - I recall a thread a while ago talking about defective tubes of Arctic MX3. Anyway, I applied Arctic Silver and now I'm at 37C after 10 minutes of Furmark.

I also reversed the orientation of my radiator fans - I switched the bottom fan to point upwards so that it would blow over the heatsinks I have attached to the voltage regulators - those are down to 75C from 100.

Got it at 900/1275 and seems to be stable... probably could push it a bit higher but I'm pretty satisfied for now. Played some Crysis Warhead and it was smooth at 1080p/max settings. I'd prefer to leave it at stock voltage.

One question though... it does not appear to lower the idle clockspeed when the card is OC'd. Is there a way to rectify this?
 
I find that if you ease of on the ram OC and focus on the core, you get better results.

1200mhz ram is enough, more than that, you risk errors which can slow down performance. My 5850s are happy at 950/1200, with 1.1vcore, only a slight bump. Loads around 60C and fan tops out at 40%, starting to be loud but still quiet enough.

One question though... it does not appear to lower the idle clockspeed when the card is OC'd. Is there a way to rectify this?

50°C is fine. People tend to relate to temps based on what they are most familiar with. For people that is 37° C so 50° C seems hot to us. The fets and power components used on video cards and motherboards have operating temps of at least 100°C and most are good to 125°C with a max of 150°C
So 50, 60, even 90°C is nothing to these parts. 50°C is like a cool breeze to them.

Maybe with the stock cooler, but it shouldn't be hitting those temps at stock speed under water cooling. Clearly something was wrong. I mean, now at 900MHz the temps have barely changed - the card would have been roasting before. It's like saying that a room temperature of 90F is fine because we can take it, despite the fact that there's an air conditioner running.

Are you saying buy an nvidia card? or what?

Yes, generally when you have driver issues, the defacto response is to get an Nvidia card instead. :ninja:

Trying a different driver set can rectify this. If not, flashing it to an unlocked BIOS definitely will. What program were you using to overclock?
 
I'm using the AMD GPU clock tool. Drivers I can do... I'm a bit wary of bricking my card though, money is tight atm. How difficult/dangerous is the bios flash process?
