5830 for $150 AR or gtx 460 1gb for $230?

No doubt 5830 is the better buy, but keep in mind you cannot crossfire a 5830 and a 5750.

I don't really like the 5830 as a card, but as when the GTX 470s dropped to $280 AR it's the best deal in its price range.

. . . assuming you ever do get the $50 rebate of course. At $200 it's back to being second rate.

I know , I hate rebates.

I was thinking 2 of these in crossfire should be at gtx 480 level of performance. 150$ now, and mabe less later on when I crossfire. 300$ for that kind of performance is nice.

I don't really like the 5830 much either, but at that price, it's hard to say no to. But be extra careful with the rebates. MSI rebates are a hassle.

Why don't you go through Tigerdirect on the last day of Bing Cashback Program (July 30th at 9pm it ends) and get 13% back on a $199 GTX 260 768MB? Its almost always faster than the HD 4830 and you can get the price (without MIR) to $173. You'll have until October 31st to collect the cashback award.

Free shipping on these two and only sales tax in FL and IL. Even if you go with the HD 5830 and Newegg use the last day of Bing Cashback to get 3% from them which will make the deal even better (and that is a very tempting deal on the MSI!). Just be very careful with the rebate details - I hear MSI is one of the trickier ones to get a rebate approved with and takes like three months even then.

I vote the Nvidia card just so people can freak the hell out more and "have proof" that your a raging Nvidia fanboy.

i heard ati is planning on releasing its 6000 series later this year, so why not just get a second 5750 now to "tide you over" until the new cards roll out?

Looking at Anandtech's review I'd say the 460 768MB is maybe 10-15% faster and about 15% more money. So it's really a question of how much you want to spend, they are priced accordingly to their performance. The 5830 gives you more video ram, though. The 460 gives you Physx. Really a toss up, it just depends on how much more oomph you want and how much you want to spend.

Of course, with all that being said, I think we all know you want an Nvidia card.

I'd get the 5830. The cooler on that one looks superb. Especially at idle the fans shouldn't be going much at all.

...and you have a crossfire motherboard. Buying nVidia would only limit your upgrade options. If I had an SLI board I'd only buy nVidia.

The 5830 is a turd. It's not any faster than a gtx 260, which was available for $99 the other day. These things will be $50 at newegg when SI comes out.

If your performance isn't up to snuff, grap another 5750 for xfire or get a gtx 460. If I were in your shoes I'd get the 460 because 1. it will give nearly 5850 performance on the cheap and oc's like mad, 2. xfire is still spotty and always a backup solution imho, and 3. you clearly prefer nvidia anyway.

You can't overestimate #3 either, trust me. I've gone back and forth over the years on my preference with both cpus and gpus, and right now is a bad time for me. I bought ati when everybody was dogging on them during the 8800 era, now I have an nvidia card because everyone is dogging on THEM. I don't really like intel that much, but in cpus there is no competition. I'm itching to upgrade my whole system right now and I can't find anything worthwhile to upgrade to. I'm sure fermi II will smoke SI so I'll just switch back to amd then I guess. :)

If it's performance you're looking for you should just double up your 5750. Unless you're thinkng of going dual 5830's down the road.

Yes ,thats exactly what I was thinking. Dual 5830's should be a good match for my cpu. I could just get a used 5750 and ride it out till the refeshes.
:hmm:
