5830 delayed indefinitely - crap

Guess we wait for Fermi and hope they have a card below $300. Or just pony up for a 5850 and call it a day. I was also eyeballing the 5830 for my next build and I'd rather upgrade than downgrade to the 128-bit 5770.

Bummer, I to was looking forward to checking out the 5830. The 5850 is still being price gouged and until it drops down into the $225 range, I'll hold off upgrading from my 4890.

AMD has a pretty big hole in their line up in both price and performance between the 5770 and 5850. They need a 5830, 5790... something.

I thought the 5830 would be just harvested 58X0, but apparently not. So are their yields good enough that they don't need anything under the 5850 or what are they doing with the chips that don't make it into a 5850+?

The chips are likely failed 5850s. But there might have been some work done on the PCB to save money. Cheaper voltage regulation and cooling, that sort of thing.

Is it possible HD5830 is a lower binned Cypress core on the exact same PCB as HD5850 but with cheaper components substituted?

That's where Fermi will fit!

*runs off*

You may be right partially in that Fermi may cause that slot to be filled. If Fermi is really good and priced competitively with ATI, ATI will probably lower the price of their cards. The 5850 may become priced at what a 5830 was going to be priced at and the 5870 would move down to the 5850 price point. That would be quite awesome.

It really depends on how Nvidia prices 360 GTX and 380 GTX.

If demand is still high enough to fully support both companies we may not see much movement in the way of prices.

If, However, Nvidia does start taking sales away from ATI then I would expect price drops on HD5870/50.

But seriously, what ATI cards would a Nvidia 360 GTX really compete against? Some people have speculated it that the low end Fermi may even be faster than HD5870.

The market is pretty small at the top end, it is not like Nvidia is invading with a high volume of mainstream chips. This is what makes me skeptical of large price drops.

No where does it say the launch of the 5830 has been delayed "indefinitely". This is just a rehash of the digitimes article regarding the test boards being recalled. In fact, it says they should still launch sometime in early Feb.

It's ok. I was originally waiting for the 5830 too, but I'm just not playing any games at the moment, so I can wait a while longer.
