I own a 980 ti and i was wondering if my cpu would be able to handle the new gpu when i upgrade, how does it currently handle the 1080 ti ?
My old 5820k would bottleneck a 1080 ti/ 1180 ?

Thank you.

A 6700K/7700K is only about 3 % faster on average in games, so if you think a 5820K is a bottleneck, then pretty much all CPUs are bottlenecks.

Yup, no cpu bottleneck going on here even if you upgrade.

No its not. With 3200+ DDR4 6700k/7700k is 10-30% faster than haswell at same clock.

btw every cpu bottleneck 1080TI at 1080P now.So GTX2080 will be bottleneck aswell.

Who buys a GTX 1080Ti to play at 1080p?

To the OP, as long as you have a reasonable overclock, say 4-4.2GHz, the 5820K should be fine with 1080Ti and its future replacement as long as you play at a higher resolution than 1080p.

A 5820K with a decent overclock on it (my old 5930K could do 4.4ghz rock solid stable) would not bottleneck a GTX 1080 Ti or GTX 1180, especially at higher resolutions.

Thank you guys, actually i never understood the whole resolution/cpu thing, higher resolution means low stress on the cpu so why would someone need a i7 to game at 4k when they just could have purchased an i5 or i3??

Pair that same RAM with a 5820k and OC it to 4.2GHz+ and it'll be well within 10% of a 6700k. And in any games that heavily hit the CPU and can be well threaded the 5820k would pull ahead.

If a 5820k is your bottleneck, than the 6700k would almost certainly be a bottleneck for you as well.

3% faster at 4K, provided both are at the same clockspeed. Sure you can game at 1080p if you want, but you don't need a 1080ti for that.

You can get 2-3% better gaming perf just tightening your RAM timings and setting it to command rate 1T. Going from 5820k to 6700k for games makes no economic sense as there's plenty of free tweaks that will get you the same boost.

Nope..HedT cpus dont scale with faster ram that much. You can gain 20-40% only from oc ram with 6700/7700k and you get maybe 5-10% in Hedt platform from memory oc.

What about my ram?
DDR4 2666
It's going to be within 5-10%.

If the 5820k is your bottleneck, then the 6700/7700k would STILL be a bottleneck. They're based on the same core design, the 6700/7700k can be clocked ~5-10% better, so they'll have 5-10% better performance in games that don't use more than 4 cores.

Any games that are properly threaded should run better on a 5820k however.

There is no reason to waste money on a 6700k/7700k if you already have a 5820k.

What would be the safest voltage to run my 5820k at 4.4ghz??
(Yes i know all cpus are different but i need a starting point)

I had mine @~1.32v when I had it at 4.4ghz.

But as you said every chip is different. And it will depend on your cooling as well.

Although games typically become less CPU bound as resolution increases, it doesn't mean the CPU stops being important as games use the CPU for other non 3D things, such as A.I, streaming data, physics etcetera. Also, even at higher resolutions you might still experience minor variations in frame latency due to the CPU.

I have to agree with Head1985 on this. HEDT CPUs benefit far less from fast RAM than mainstream CPUs with dual channel memory controllers. That still didn't stop me from overclocking my RAM to 3400 CL15 though :D

Skylake is on average about 10-15% faster than Haswell per clock, so I don't know where you're getting 30% from. Maybe if you compare a 7700K with DDR4 3200+ RAM to a 4790K with DDR3 1600 it would be 30% faster, but with faster DDR3 2400, the gap would be much smaller.
