580 GTX - lowering temps

My card runs at about 40-42c idle and 84c load with fan on auto. This is with a small overclock of 850/1700/2025.

I bumped it up to 900/1800/2050 on 1.1v, the temps go up to 90c load if I leave the fan on auto. Afterburner sets the fan at 75% on auto, if I manually crank it up to 85% the temps go down to 70c. Afterburner doesn't seem to let me go up beyond 85%, though I would like to be able to keep the fan at a lower setting, 85% is pretty loud.

I'm not too worried about the 85c, but when it gets close to hitting above 90c it gets scary. Are my temps normal? My card is using the stock eVGA cooler, and I haven't tried reapplying thermal paste.

If I remember correctly, the older GTX 580 BIOS limits the max fan speed to 85%. Newer ones allow for 100% fan speed.

so what is your concern then? how to lower the temps? if so, just set your fan speed to 100% manually to keep it cool... good thermals makes hardware last...

correct me if I'm wrong guys, but gpus should not exceed 85c to avoid the quick wear and tear of the card...

If you o/c , you should ramp the fan up faster, and higher. If you don't like the noise, and the the 90c temps worry you. Stop o/c.
What kind of case is this in ? For example, a Antec 300 has a rear and a top fan with 3 settings. Setting them to high, expels air faster, bringing in outside air faster.
Cooling things.

I guess people don't read replies in threads. You cannot go past 85% fan speed on the older GTX 580 BIOS. He will need to update the BIOS for his card to set it to 100% manually.

Figured I'd post an update. If you want the newer BIOS with the fan speed unlocker, you can download it from EVGA here.

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?&m=1034790&mpage=1

The version for the 1.5GB GTX 580 is 70.10.49.00.83. My three cards are running great with this version. You may also want to try this version if you experience TDR issues. I haven't had the problem, but it may fix it for those that do encounter it.

I think anything over 80 degrees really is to hot.

I used ATIflash, and adjusted the fanspeed %s, and at what temps fan speeds should be at.
(changed bios settings on my card (a 5870)).

I can run furmark and not get over 75 celcius now.

However haveing a 580 run at 100% fanspeed all the time? jeez, thats gonna be tough on your ears.
Doesnt sound like a viable solution, ei. telling someone to just manually set it to 100% and run it there always.

That's a 5870. You cannot expect to see the same temps on different cards in the same conditions. Especially those with different architectures. The GTX 580 does run hotter and will run over 80C at default clocks and cooling depending on what's being run on it.

Aftermarket cooling. I put an accelero xtreme on my gtx 480 and I haven't been over 52c yet overclocked to 861 core and 1.07v. I did give it a pretty aggressive fan profile but even still I can't hear it.

That's really good. Have you tried the latest OCCT GPU test? Is that the same GTX 480 I sold ya?

No I just use BF3 for testing purposes.:) it's actually a different 480. I sold that one and tried a 580 awhile before getting another 480.
