5770 idling at 56c?

Hi,

I bought and setup a new rig just over a year ago now, and got a XFX 1GB 5770 as my Graphics Card. I've had no problems with it until recently, when my rig started to shut down unexpectedly, and I also got ALOT of blue screen errors.

I discovered I had a VCore issue which resulted in damage to my Motherboard (which I have now replaced), however I'm not sure if it's also damage my graphics card.

It's currently sitting at 55-57c, with nothing but Chrome running. My understanding is it should be sitting at 35c.

I recently tried to run MW2 and it went to 96c, which I understand is far too high and can cause major issue's.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight into this? Do I need to order a new card and RMA this one?

Any comments appreciated.

Not to want to point out the obvious, but have you tried cleaning the fan?

Yes I replaced the motherboard today so everything got a clean, it's not spotless but it's certainly not clogged with dust/dirt.

The idle temp is also slowly creeping up, it's at 61c just now, so risen 5c in a little over 5 minutes. Again nothing running but Chrome.

What are you using to monitor the temperature? GPU-z? If so, check clock speeds/voltages/etc to see if the card is idling fully or in an active/3D mode (could be caused by browser acceleration or multi-monitor).

I'm using Catalyst Control Centre, which is showing the temp as 60c and the current GPU Clock as 157Mhz and Memory Clock as 300MHz. I checked a link previously which showed that those settings are what it defaults to when it is idling, apart from my temp is nearly 20c higher.

With Fire Fox (latest) open, sometimes my temps can hit 56C in 70F ambients and sometimes will go as low as 36C idle .. i think part of the reason is monitor size. I have a 24" LCD with my 5770.. one thing I tried was manually downlocking the memory and core on the GPU.. another thing I did was place a fan to blow directly on the NorthBridge which also cools the GPU and it helps. The NB use to hit 104F and > now it sits at 28C in 68F ambients. O, btw, those GPU temps are with the fan at 20% speed. I love silence while on my computer :)
