5720 X 1080 resolution... ATI or nvidia?

I am planning to triple monitor setup an upcoming game.

so far I am thinking :

gtx 580 SLI
or
AMD 6970 CF


or amd 6990

If money is no object then GTX 580 SLI is the fastest but if you want a better value AMD 6970 is better.

well I can afford either but if the cheaper can be good enough to play SWTOR on 3 screens at that resolution with 120hz monitors it will be cool.

the thing is though I only have an 850 watt power supply. it's a high quality one though

I can't tell which uses less power . it looks like they are both based on 40 nm architecture

TBQH, at that resolution the performance of these 2 setups is pretty similar aside from a few oddballs here and there.

For the power concern, you should go with the 6970s. 580s can peak at a much higher Wattage and could create some instability.

someone in another forum was saying that the 6990 even though it lists 4 GB... only has 2 or something.... with Vram.... that makes it worse than getting a crossfire setup... but from the looks of these benchmarks it looks like that is not an issue at all since the 6990 performs just slightly under 2 6970's

Way too good to be true. i used all 6970s/6990 and GTX 580s.

The first part of the chart is correct; a typo crept into the bottom 2 sections of it .. and worst of all copied into the FX-8150 article.

i am running benches for Part III SLI vs. CF, High-end Multi-GPU Scaling - the CPU's Role, right now and expanding the experiment a bit to include Phenom II X2 and Core i3 as well as FX-8150 and Phenom II X4 (and i will put the AMD chips under water to see how close to 5GHz i can get with the FX; and how far i can go with the Ph IIs). i know i can push the old Core i7 (LGA 1366) over 4.0 GHz and i'll do some underclocking also

i'll also be overclocking TriFire to HD 6970 speeds (880/1375MHz) and we will finally see how multi-GPU scales with CPU speed and cores.

I have a single 2gb 6950 and 3 1080p 60Hz displays, it'll play SW:TOR just fine (don't ask how I know, because I can't answer 😛). For you maybe just crossfire 2 of them if you're looking to save a few bucks over the 6970s.

Or, early 7k series might be released by the time that game does, could be worth waiting.

it wouldnt perform worse, since a 6990 has 4gb split on 2 gpus, and a 6970 has 2gb for its once gpu...

there are other things that would make the 6970 CF a bit faster than the 6990s though. The 6990s are also built to be overclockable to a high degree with burning or dying..

The issue with HD 6990 is that is loud once you flip the BIOS switch. The results in my charts are of the HD 6990 at stock (factory clocked and warrantied) settings.
- Of course, once you flip the switch, you aim for 880/1375MHz as a minimum and you will match or beat HD 6970 stock CF performance.

However, i personally prefer HD 6970 CF over HD 6990 since they overclock also and they are a bit quieter (believe it or not).
