Been awhile since I've done it but AFAIK all you will need is a Windows 7/8 key and you should be able to install/activate Win 10 on any compatible PC.

Keep in mind however that if you want to do a "clean install" rather than an upgrade you will need to either install Win 7 SP1 or some version of Win 10 itself first to make it work. (10 has to "see" a version of Windows to install unless you have a full "retail" copy)

That has never been true for me - using the USB installer directly from MS, I just put the key in during install and it works. I have done this with COA and old technet keys for myself. Both for W10 and W11.

Some systems (notably HP laptops) have the Windows key in firmware permanently so you never need to manually enter it .... and again it depends on the version of the Windows installer you use.

A full-retail version will allow a clean install to a PC with no OS without any tricks but doing a clean install on a PC with no version of Windows already in use MAY require you to run the process twice and have the OS "upgrade" itself. (or at least that used to be the case)

MS wants as many people using Windows as they can get these days so the activation/upgrade "rules" are now more like "guidelines" lol.

That's what I payed for my last 2 copies of Windows 10 pro and I haven't had any issues. The place I buy from won't help if you happen to choose the wrong key type though.

I ain't know how this thread turned into Windows keys, but I'll take it. I am in need of a new W10 key anyways so the derailing is fine by me. :p

In other on-topic news, I bought the 5700X for a cool $200 from Microcenter. Got $20 off by buying a mobo with it, too. It was too good to pass up.

shoot! I was just there and uh....spent a crap load of money on "other things," but doing so had made me think that I really will pick up a quick, value ~black friday era 570 or whatever Mobo and stop worrying about this BIOS update, a new 2TB NVME, etc...and the creep continues.

but yeah, damn, I'm now pretty much committed to BF time mobo/GPU/NVME/PSU? upgrade now, lol.

I actually have an unused mini-ATX that I'd really like to use for this, but I'm worried about the power needs and ability to fit, and also the 6950XT/3090 I think I might find within the next two months...also fitting that case. So now I think, open, workbench type? Or just "modify" the case myself. I actually skipped that case, because 2 years later when I ended up opting for Vega 64, it wouldn't fit the mini, case. Now, I realize, such things don't matter. I will cut this case, if I have to. ...or just screw some stuff to aluminum billet if I can find it!
