No contest. 256MB is wasted on cards that slow, IMO. The *much* faster 9600XT will serve you much better for gaming. Plus, it's an ATi card, so it has a three year warranty, IIRC.

Edit: Or this, if you don't have an extra card to mail in. A bit slower than the XT, but still faster than a 5700LE or 9550.

Alternatively, if you're comfortable buying used, a used GF FX 5900 or Radeon 9700 Pro for about $100 will be faster than a 9600P/XT. The 5900 may be slower in some DX9 games, but it should be faster otherwise. The 9700P will be the fastest, but may have a rolling lines problem with the VGA out, but you can get around that by using the DVI-VGA adapter.

what if the choice were between a regular non-pro 9800 like the Sapphire Radeon 9800 Atlantis and an ATI 9600XT?

According to the comaprison on ATI's site the 9800 has a lower clock speed (memory and engine) than the 9600XT...

a 9800non pro owns a 9600XT. it has 256bit interface. but make sure the 9800 is a 256bit, sometimes companies try and claim a card is a 9800, but it only is 128 bit like the 9600XT.

most of the regular 9800s on newegg have a 128bit memory interface..

very few are 256bit and those are 200$+

btw, how old is the 9700 pro? most reviews i have seen compare it with a Geforce 4....

the 9700pro is still a very good card. it STOMPS the geforce4's and is ALMOST as fast as the 9800pro.

as you can see, the 9700Pro is always right on the tail of the 9800pro, and in my book it is certainly a very good deal at $140 in my link. I do not think a 9800pro is worth over $60 more.
