I got a 5700 Ultra, will this card last me until pci-xpress? I play most my games on 1024 x 768 with no AA and an AS-filtering. Or am I going to get the typical "Shoulda gotten the 5900se" ? Just wondering

If it does what you want it to, and for sure your going to upgrade when pci-express comes out, then it should hold you over.

Well, how do your games play? Do you feel the card plays smoothly at the resolutions your using?
The 5700Ultra is right in line with the 9600XT. The 9600XT has the DX9 advantage over the 5700U for games like HL2, but the 5700U is
larger than life for OpenGL games such as DoomIII.

If your unhappy with your 5700U let me know. I have a Radeon 9700 to trade with you. Even swap. But I shouldn't put this here..

Here is a link to my FS/FT thread. 9700 for 5700U/5900nu

that card shud suffice ur needs but i suggest u go for the 9600pro/xt which is available for the same price and will give u better performance on games.and u will also be able to play Half-Life2 at those settings without any problems or hitches:D . stay away from powercolor though(only if u want to overclock)cause their core is overclock locked and cant be overclocked.if u try to overclock the powerclor card ur system will become unstable.try going for the ASUS radeon9600XT if possible.

Haha thats a tempting offer there with that Radeon 9700, but seeing as how I got this card as a christmas gift it's just a matter of principle that I wouldn't trade or "swap".

5700 will hold u down ....but if U have enough$$ go with the 9700 pro ..... rock solid with 1280/1024 every thing max with 6X AA and 16X AF .... get 70 to 80+ with FPS games

Im also noticing your rig specs in your sig. There is a lot of room for potential there if you upgrade your CPU speed. If your mobo runs at 400fsb, you would do well to upgrade to a 2.0A. I know its only 200Mhz but its also a lot more cache and a revised core for overclocking.
Oh and no prob about the Christmas gift swap. I understand :) But keep me in mind if you change your mind. The card is right here calling to you.... ::::: take me sneaky::::: :::::take me now...::::: :D

hehe my only reservation about a CPU upgrade would be the transfer process, I have a fully updated BIOS, but I own a DELL system, Can I remove the heatsink on my current P4, re-apply it to a new one, and insert it back in with no problems? The thing is that the Dimension 4500 uses a sheathed fan that sucks the heat out, and the boxed P4's come with a fan, would that even fit, i'm o so confused.

Hmm, I found a 2.66 Ghz P4 with the 512kb L2 cache, and 533 Mhz fsb on ewiz.com for $167, if this would work with my system, (which i'm almost 90% sure it would) would that be a green light? And when I DO get it, would I notice a significant performance gain?

Well actually I forgot to ask you whether you had a socket 423 or 478 Pentium 4. Very different.
On the new dell computers, you can remove the green sheathe that ducts the air to the rear case fan. Then look at the release mechanism for the processor. You should be able to see if it is removable or not. What Model is your Dell PC or rather the service tag. That would help.

Then I would be able to tell exactly what Dell put into your computer at purchase and will tell me what can be done with your system.
At my last job, I was a Dell certified Tech.

Ask me anything you want to know about my system, I can give you an extremely accurate response, i'm using AIDA32, sorry, can't access the service tag on the side of the case, its in an enclosure and to check it would involve unplugging everything and sliding out the tower, that would interrupt our zippy little convo. here :)

Ok no prob. Do you have a socket 423 CPU or 478?

Do you know what chipset your motherboard came with.

If I know these things, I can tell you how high you can go.

Ok, according to Dell, your system with the 845E chipset can accept up to a Pentium4 2.8 CPU with 533 fsb.

Check this out.

Hmmmm, that sounds solid, but I guess my only reservation now would be the performance gains I would see, and the re-sell value of my current CPU on ebay or something of that nature. I was toying with the notion of a 2.53Ghz or a 2.66 Ghz P4. Any comments?

So if this is indeed your system, you have PALUNTY of head room. The reason I wanted your service tag is because sometimes Dell makes little variations to same model numbers during it lifetime. The link I gave you is a general Dimension 4500 and may not necessarily be your exact specs.

Well I ordered my 4500 a good while after it came out, and when I configured it (for my budget at the time :() I had to select the 1.8 Ghz, but the option for the 533 Mhz fsb P4's was there.
