56K modem help!

I know that 56k modems may be a little archaic for most people here. Personally, I use a cable modem, but this question is for my mom's computer. I recently assembled a computer for my mom, and she uses a 56k modem to connect to to the internet. After connecting, the modem continues to make noise, as if the handshaking does not complete, yet she is connected. Does anyone have any ideas what's going on?

I tried that, but it didn't work. I also tried turning off the modem speaker using the AT command, which also didn't work. I managed to get around it by plugging something into the modem speaker jack. If anyone has better ideas, let me know.
