I am about to buy a new internal 56k modem. Prices range from $10 to over $50. Will a $60 USRobotics modem actually be faster than say Jaton Wincom that can be found for bellow $20?

Any sugestions for a good deal on modem?

When you talk of winmodems, Lucent is high on the list as reliable and fast. There is also a FAQ that references winmodems.

I need a good modem. If winmodems are good and cheap then that would be perfect, otherwise I would pay a bit more.

Are all modems around $20 winmodems?

Creative V.92 modem at newegg for $26 shipped is a good modem. ( It connects at 48bps everytime for me ... ) I also have the $60 US Robotics modem on my main pc and it works great. Not a lot of disconnects and works perfectly under Linux. Dont buy some cheap modem as you will be connectiing at low speeds...

I've been using a Lucent modem for over a year now and have been
consistently connecting at 48K+. For the price and upgradeability you
can't beat them.........Greg

I also have a Lucent Winmodem.

Again, I recommend it. I always connect at 48k or better, and about 90% of the time I connect at 49,333 bps.

Also, it gets pretty good pings, so if you play games, I'd recommend getting this one.

modems with the conexant chip are great for surfing and maybe some downloading and games. never tried lucent winmodem but my conexant-based modem works great. it connect at 48kbps and sometimes at 49.333kbps. i had this old cirrus logic modem which connects at 57.6kbps 100% of the time, never really knew if it was connected at that speed in the real world though.

Yep I`m using the Elsa 56k PCI Microlink HCF modem(Conexant based Winmodem with DSP) and it works great with WinXP,I also have a hardware modem(Diamond SupraExpress 56i V Pro) and to be honest both perform about the same with same connection speeds(48k - 49.3k),download speeds & even in gaming pings are the same.Remember the quality of your phoneline and ISP play an important role as well.

used two of the same AMR PCtel modems and they always connect at 50.2kb/sec to various ISPs.

not bad if you ask me...checked the CPU utilization..nothing big...u can pick them up for under 10 USD.

My Lucent WinModem runs perfect. Just recently its been crappy but I think its down to my ISP. Near 2 years and its served me well so far.

don't just say conexant, there are different conexant chips, some are software modem chip , some are controllerless chip. for example, if you check out aopen's modem, they've software, controllerless, hardware modem, all use coxanent chip.

I happen to have a mix of hardware external modems(14.4,28,33.6..56k) and of them, the fastest is a 28.8k by Motorola, next is a 28.8 Cardinal. The 14.4 Intel actually has the fastest ping of the bunch and its fastest at finding a page but its transfer is just too slow. The 56k Best Data and USR are what I use though for downloads, yes me still on dialup. :D

Lucent winmodems work great and you can make them call-waiting modems if you play with the drivers.
I bought 2 used Zoom external modems for $30 each, shipped and they are great.
