56k Modem disconnect problems

Hello,

In recent weeks I've had to go back to using a 56k modem to access the internet and I've had this continous problem of being disconnected from the internet whenever I do actions such as opening programs or playing mp3s while I'm browsing the web or downloading. ( think it happens whenever I tax my system, but playing mp3s doesnt seem that much). The modem is a no named brand, but I'm pretty sure its not a winmodem as its using an intel chipset. And I have a cheapy winmodem that doesn't disconnect but instead pauses for a very long time.

I've tried using system mon to see if I get disconnected on full system loads, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I don't think its an isp problem since I've experienced this problem across 2 isps...god I miss dsl:(

Here are my system specs.

Winxp
athlon 1700
Soyo Dragon+ mobo
512mb ram
sblive <=using drivers windows automatically installed because I lost my driver cd
seagate 7200 rpm 8meg 120gig
leadtek geforce ti4400

Please help this is very annoying and I'm stumped on how to fix it. I've tried upgrading the modem drivers and this has done nothing.

Winmodems are softmodems right? And IIRC softmodems use more system resources to run. Maybe switching to hardware modem will solve the problem. It won't cost that much.

Frys sold their Best Data 56k v.92 for $10 out the door and I don't know if that sale is still going on though.

Make up your mind. What makes you so sure that it is a hardware modem rather than a software modem?
I would bet that it is a IRQ conflict.

because when I bought it from compgeeks it specifically said its a hardware modem....


let me clarify, I have 2 modems 1 hardware and 1 softmodem. The softmodem does not disconnect, but instead pauses at the same instances the hardware modem would disconnect.

I've already tried moving the soundcard and modem around various pci slots

How would I go about verfying and fixing the irq error?

so you have 2 modems installed?

This thread reminded me of the older years, when modems acceptedhangup commands sent from other other users on the net.

Sounds like it may be an issue between the mouse and modem driver.

Do you happen to be using a LOGITECH mouse?

Also, is the modem a VOICE modem?
(if it is an INTEL chipset more than likely a HIRO)

Note: checked Compu-Geeks website. Is it this one?
Intel 56Kbps V.92 PCI Data/Fax Modem

If so, it says NOT WinXP compatible.

DOH!!! that is the modem I bought from the Geeks. Damnit when I bought it they said it was XP compatible. My opinion of Compgeeks is getting lower and lower:|

btw the mouse is a microsoft intellimouse if that makes a diffrence anymore.



Can anyone recommend a reliable, cheap, maybe seriel modem? I miss DSL :(
