I got tired of the performance hit of having a win modem, so I just installed a Rockwell 56K ISA hardware modem (Cable & DSL are not availible in my area). My computer now claims that I am hooked up at 115,200 bps. I always was able to hook up at 52,000 or 53,333 with the winmodem. I cannot see how this is possible to be hooking up at this speed. What do you guys think? Is my modem sending a incorrect connection speed number to my computer? Any other ideas?

Your system is reporting the port speed, not the connect speed for the modem. Basically, you have the port opened at 115,200. Most likely, you are getting similar actual connect speeds as you were before.

Your modem is reporting the DTE speed (computer to modem) instead of the connect speed (modem to modem). This is usually caused by not having the proper .ini file for the modem.

Add to the initialisation string "W2" to force display of the connection rate under Modem Properties in the Control Panel.

Its in the advanced connection settings in the DUN profile you are dialing with. Put it in the "extra settings" box.

good bit of info; had always wondered about that myself. especially since I'm only 4 blocks from the telephone substation I was told that I should be able to get a good connection. Using a 56 isa modem, I'm connecting at 50,667 bps.
