What is the best? I had a friend tell me 3com or USR.. Internal or External does it really matter or make a difference? Thanks for the help in advance..
I am still using dial up also. And I was using a Supra Express 56K Serial Bus external. But yesterday I bought a USR 56K Performance Pro internal. And without question it puts my Supra to shame. I am averaging 35-50 pings less. The gaming mode truly does work as advertised. I was shocked to say the least. It connects at no less than 49K and often at 50K plus. Thats right I said 50K plus. My Supra got 48K at best and often at around 45-46K. I am going to work with Perfromance Pro for a week and do a little write up and post it here on the board. But the Performance Pro modem is definately a good buy. I would assume it will work just as well for anyone else. I was pinging around 220-250 consistently on a server that at best I was doing 280 with the Supra. But the Performance Pro maintained the lower ping with pretty good consistency where as the Supra struggled often well over 300. Both had lag stop interruptions, but it was occasional with the Perfromance pro where as it was often with the Supra. The lag outs were brief, only a couple of seconds with USR, but often times a minute or more with the Supra. I will post a little write up in a couple of days, but I have no problem recommending the USR Performance Pro Modem for dial up.
Those "Gaming Modems" are nothing more than a hardware modem (NON-Winmodem). You can find a similar modem for much less. If you get a chance, look around for a hardware modem (basically you can tell the Winmodems apart because they say "Controllerless" on the box somewhere".
i'd say you should make sure your lines are clean. there's no point in spending cash on a piece of name-brand hardware that supposedly performs better than the generic stuff. if you're lines and setup are up to it, you should be all right.
Yep, the "gaming" modem is mostly just a marketing term. A good quality hardware modem will do you just as well. Sorry bout the gamming nudge.
Actually I have to disagree with you guys because I am experiencing first hand there is a definate difference. The Supra is suppose to be one of the best hardware modems you can buy. Both of these modems cost the same, $79.99 at Best Buy. I even tried tweaking with different strings and programs with the Supra and it still comes up short. The USR is doing something better, whatever it is. Last night I was connecting 3-5K higher and and getting approx. 50 or better less ping and less lag interruptions.
classy, I'm positive that if you tweaked the right settings on that Supra (assuming it was hardware based), you could have gotten identical pings/performance as the "Gaming" modem
Good old Thresh and the folks at firingsquad.com have a review up about the 3Com Internet Gaming Modem. Skipping to the Final Verdict:
<< The Gaming modem did have 15% faster pings than the Winmodem, but pings were even with the Diamond SupraMax software modem. Nevertheless, the Internet Gaming Modem is still a very good modem, but not as great as the press release makes it sound. The modem isn't significantly better than anything that's already available on the market, but its performance places it among the best modems currently available on the market. >>
You may want to read through the full review, though.
Line speed and quality is usually helped by making sure nothing's connected to your line-out port of your modem. Make sure that's clear and see what speeds you can get.
