-my dial-up grinds to a halt after about 5 mins online.i've checked for trojans and viruses there's no prob there .i assume it's just down to a bad line or any there any connection settings i can change thanks

Most likely noise on your phone line. Some modems (especially external modems) handle noise better than internals. It seems like internal win-modems are the worst.

You didn't mention that you scanned for spyware/adware. They can lock up a modem.

I've seen a number modems that seemed to freeze after a few moments of use that ended up needing to be replaced.

thanks for the ideas i'll check for spyware first.i have an internal modem probably a winmodem(how do i tell?)it's got a windows driver does that make it a winmodem?

You never mentioned your OS.

The issue you describe applies to some people with XP and MS has a Hot Fix for it.
