56k = 5.6?

Newbie question here, but why do I get download speeds of 5.6k per second is the modem is 56K?

Am I thick or is there a reason for this?

A 56K modem is 56000 bits/sec.
Your download speeds are being shown in bytes/sec.

8 bits = 1 byte

The alleged 56k is actually only 53k (government regulation).

As said above 1Byte=8 bits. (B=Byte, b=bit).

53000/8 = 6600 Bytes. (6.6KB/sec).

Loses on System overhead reduce it to 5-6KB/sec.
