Which of these cards is the better/fastest? The black edition is the one from XFX. I am asking because I need a card for a friends computer and he doesn't want ATI because he thinks the Nvidia cards are better. Would either of these two cards be better than an HD4870 512?

I would say the 55 nm 260 would be best, as the 65 nm 260 core 216 competes with the hd4870 1GB, I believe. From what I hear, the GTX 200 series oc's better, especially with the new 55nm 260. I would recommend the EVGA 55nm 260, I might want to get one myself for either step up or SLI.

they are 259 on evga. http://www.evga.com/products/m...0200%20Series%20Family

if not, then get the 1GB 4870. of course, I hear he prefers nvidia, the above link is probably best for him.

The black edition would be better if your friend doesn't know how to overclock. If he does or is not afraid of trying the 55nm is has the better potential overclock.
