54 mbps, 108 mbps wireless & vista

I'm running Vista on my HTPC, which is connected to my network via a 108 mbps 802.11g netgear router. The wireless adapter in the PC is also a netgear 108 mbps 802.11g type. However, in vista, it says my connection speed is only 54 mbps. Further more, when I try to copy files between my office computer hard wired to the router and the HTPC, the transfer speed is only 12 mbps. How can I fix this?

I am using the beta vista driver for the adapter on the HTPC. The regular XP driver did not work correctly, it would recieve the signal and say it was connected to the network, but wouldn't identify the network or allow any communication through.

Wireless connection speeds fluctuate all the time. Besides that, 54Mbps is a theoretical maximum. When you take in to account signal strength, type of data, and overhead, you can easily chew off a good chunk of that bandwidth. As far as the reported connection speed... well, you said it yourself - you're using a beta Vista driver. Be happy that it works at all.

1. Use wired connections, gigabit where possible.
2. 15-20 Mb/s actual data transfer is good for a "54 Mb/s" bit rate connection.

edit: nm, your Mb/s = mbps, I was confused at first.

as jack said, you'll need to get 'real' vista drivers for the current adapter, or get a new adapter that has vista drivers

or use a wire like madwand said

good luck! :sun:

Jack's link is great.

Here's the thing though - AT BEST, with perfect conditions, surrounded by a shield, with no other devices in the 802.11g frequency range your throughput will be around 15-20 Mbs.

Wireless is slow. It's just the way it is.

According to that page and the links within (which are very nice tyvm), my superG network at ~60' should be able to get ~30 Mb/s, but I am still only getting ~12 Mb/s. I'm still trying to figure out whether this is a Vista driver issue, or a radio issue.

that 30Mb/s is probably best case, non real world testing. I know that when a major wireless chipset vendor approached us, they did their testing in the 6th level of the underground parking garage, with LOS and no cars in there. They had a clean spectrum and no other devices. Real world testing... 😕
