I just built a rig for my bosses daughter who is going to college. I installed the stock heatsink and fan but wasa a little careless and kinda mucked up the heat paste with my fingers, I just forgot it was on the bottom of the HS. Anyway I went ahead and installed everything and am now runnign Prime95 and it seems to settle around 54 under load, is that OK? I am just afraid that me touching the paste might of screwed something up.

Considering the stock fan only spins at 3000 RPM I am thiking these temps are fine, plus the diodes on motherboards never seem to be correct. Also, I cant see her using this comp for anything besides homework and listening to music or watching a dvd. Oh and everything is at stock speeds.

Seems a little warm. I know my 3.4E Prescott usually hits around 50^C under full load, and thats with an XP-120 heat sink on it.

I'd check the thermal paste, redo it if necessary. Airflow to the CPU cooler could also be a concern.

haha no pic

The airflow is fine, the case is pretty empty. The paste could be the only problem as like I said, i did rub it around a bit with my fingers. I guess I will just let Prime run longer and see how it goes.

54^C is within spec for the A64, thats true, but its still on the high side. I just find it hard to believe that an A64 Venice is running hotter than my Prescott.

Mine does that on air when cool & quiet is enabled and I'm just surfing the web.
When I play games it gets higher, but yeah, 54 under load is perfectly fine.

I can get about 37C on Air (idle) @ 2.65 ghz....At stock, with some AS5 and a good HSF 35C is pretty possible.

Yeah I did end up taking the heat sink off, and applied some Arctic Silver 3 but am getting identical temps. Did I apply the AS right? I followed the directions, rubbed some on the heatsink then cleaned it off, then put a small dap on the middle of the chip and bolted on the Heatsink. The AS3 is two years old put I kept it stored in the fridge so it should still be ok, and cool n quiet is enabled.
