533 mhz cpu

will a 533 mhz(p4) cpu work on a board that supports 400 mhz ?Its multiplier is 100~112 X 24 .

socket 478 soyo p4 vda . I have misplaced (lost) the p4 2.0 that it had , I would like to get the 2.4 533 1meg part for it .

I have the manual that came with the board , it says 400 mhz . I dont think any bios upgrade soyo did before they bailed uped it to 533 . Thanks for the replies .

I believe all socket 478 boards actually supported 533MHz FSB, as that was one of the reasons to moving to the new socket. The new P4s used a 533MHz FSB which most socket 423 boards could not support.

Also by looking at the chipset name,

VIA Apollo P4X266A

it seems that it should support a 533MHz FSB. 266 X 2 = 533, and I know that socket A motherboard chipsets(different but using as a loose example) usually included the FSB support in the name.

For example,

The Abit Kt7a-Raid was based off the KT133A which supported 133MHz FSB processors which supported a 266MHz FSB since it was effectively double that.

Thanks Andrew for the reply , I was wondering if the board would post , even if it auto clocked it at 400 rather than trying to manual set it at 533 . In other words would a p 4 2.4 533 mhz run at 400 ? I think it would , but I don't know . I know ram will / can run at a lower speed .

It will run, except that it will run at a lower frequenty.

Lets say a 533MHz bus speed when down to 400 on a processor with a 10x multiplier for ease.

133 X 10 = 1.33GHz

Now with a 400MHz bus it would be this,

100 X 10 = 1.00GHz

You might be able to overclock it back up to 533MHz if you have the options in your bios.

That chipset only supports a 400 MHz Front Side Bus. The name is apparently because it supports 266 MHz DDR memory. Strange but true.

It depends on the board and revision actually.

It seems that the Via P4X266A brought a 533MHz FSB to the table. Of course, it all really depends on the board and revision itself.

If it were me I would go for it.

those 2.4/533/1MBL2 chips are SWEET overclockers, my friend still uses one, went all the way to 3.6GHz on air, and default volts (he's afraid to raise the VID for some weird reason) but at 3.6 it's actually pretty damn quick for an old chip...


i have a 2.4/533/512k still around, it went to 3.4 24/7 stable, could bench up to 3.55ish.... still runs to this day....and outperformed non overclocked opteron 148's woot.
