52x24x52x Cendyne CD-RW at Staples for $17.95 after $22 instant off and $40 MIR

Was at Staples today and got one....it is in the Sunday Ad. When I got home & openned it up it's a model no CDRW-5224A ASUStek.

Is this a Lite-on? Comes with Nero 5.5.9.2

No, its an Asus. I bought the cendyne 52x last week at Office Max. The first box the guy brought out was not a lite-on. Told him to go back and find one with the 12 digit serial number, score! I had previously thought that the 52x cendyne was a guaranteed lite-on, but they've obviously started using other manufacturers now.

If you had bought it off the website you could have used a coupon code to get an additional $10.00 off.

You'd be over $50 so it would have been free shipping too... $8 total after MIR.

Check around, you'll find a $10 off $50 for staples.

Edited: I read the FAQ... oops on the code.

Hmm, i bought this last week from staples. Can i call and get the difference back? How would they handle the MIR? Would i have to return the CDRW and then buy it back again?

Couldn't pass up the chance so I had to get it.

P.S. If I don't get a Lite-On then I am going to go into the store during a non-rush time and talk the clerk into helping me find one in the store if they have one.

This deal was not available on line.............. it was a B&M only.

I may hit some stores on my commute home Monday to try and get a 52x Lite-on.

dahunan,

Yep, that's the one....it wasn't there at that price (and the rebate was not listed) when I checked this morning after seeing it in the Sunday paper.

HOT or NOT...?

I got a Benq [you can tell by the serial "5224W"] with code 5224W. Are these any good? It does not support Mt. Ranier format, but it does support RAW DAO, RAW DAO 16, RAW DAO 96 versus the Lite-On's RAW DAO 16, RAW DAO 96. On the only review I could find it seems to have very good scratch-cd reading capabilities too, and in CloneCD all reports well.

So.. hot or not? I can go back if it is not and get the LiteOn.

Hi all,

Although the lite-on's are nice, I don't do any great burning by any stretch of the imagination so I kept this since the reviews show it to be a solid drive.

My Cendyne was a rebadged Asus drive model#CRW5224A (OS reads it as Cendyne522452AU)

Problem is I can't seem to flash the firmware to the newest v1.35. If anyone is successful, please LMK.

Thanks.

I have heard about this before. You need to edit the firmware with notepad, and change the drive model/make to what is in your registry to get a successful flash and 'turn' it into a true Asus drive from a Cendyne half-breed. Look up somewhere on Firmware Flash and there will be more info on that. Back up your current firmware though, just to be safe.

Thanks for the heads on this. I was about to drop $70 on the Best Buy deal (with a $50 MIR), this is much hotter especially with the $10 off $50 coupon floating around. Plus I guess this comes with nero?

Hm.. I just saw the review on CDRlabs.com. Seems Lite-Ons aren't too good with errors... either at not making them, or reading them. From the limited info I can gather about the BenQ, it can get the job done, but is nothing flashy. No Mt. Rainier support at all though ;( But, still can't beat it for $10 AR.

yes it comes with nero... look at the back of the box for the model number to make sure you get the lite on version. thats what i did. i went through the pile.... LOL

So before this deal goes away, I have a quick question:

Right now I have two drives, an HP 9100i and a 16x DVD-ROM drive. I'm replacing them with the Cendyne 4x DVD+R/RW drive posted in another thread. My goal is to have just one drive, but this deal seems way too cheap to pass up.

What is everyone's thoughts? What can I get with this Cendyne 52x24x52x drive (provided it's a Lite On) that I won't get with the DVD+R/RW, besides the speed advantage? I almost want to buy it for the software alone, if the Nero included with retail is the full version.

I picked one up at staples last nite ... did some research and decided on the Asus over the Lite-on. I was reading a post on the CloneCD Forums (sorry don't have a link) that mentioned that the new versions of CD-ROM Security Software (Safedisk3?) are targeting Lite-On drives. So in a nutshell the new CD-ROM Security Software will not allow you to make backups of new games and other software. The forum also discusses that the ASUS drives may not have the same issue.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm goin surfing for the link now so that you guys can analyze it 🙂

**ok i'm back sorry couldn't find the forum thread again. maybe one of you is more familiar with this issue than me

Not sure if this has been posted but for those of you that are going to the B&M to get the drive. On the back on the box on the specs sticker there is a cell for "Model:" Here are the various ones I saw yesterday

5224W - BENQ
5224P - BENQ
LTR-52246S - Lite-On
CRW-5224A - ASUS

Good deal. Thanks for the model numbers...

I would get it just for the peace of mind of not having to use your $130+ DVD-writer to burn lots of CD-Rs and shorten it's lifespan. Plus, you can do disc to disc burns.
