I have Nero 5.0 (I think?) and a 52x Lite-on burner I bought about a month ago.

The firmware on the burner is probably the latest as the drive was only manufactured a few months ago, and I believe Nero to be up to date as well. What could be the problem? The 52x speed doesn't even show up in the write speed list. It only goes up to 40x

it's not that big of a deal, but I'd like to burn at 52x since I bought a 52x burner

thanks

more than likely its your media.

Most cheap CD-Rs are only rated for 40x and as such, that's the maximum speed Nero allows you to burn out.

Media quality and rating is about the single biggest deal in terms of burning. After the speed of the drive of course. Crappy and/or low rated media simply will not burn at maximum speeds. High quality media is needed to burn at the highest speeds. I have crappy 40x media that won't burn at more than 30x. I also have quality 32x media that burns at 40x.

Try newer media. I've got some really ancient TY media that will only burn at 24. Bought new TY, I get full speed with that.

The Lite-On drives feature SMART-BURN which detects the media type (actually, the material that the CD is made of .. if you've ever seen different CD-Rs, some have different colored burn sides ... that's because they use a different compound.) You can download a program from Lite-On's website that will read a disc that's in your Lite-On drive and tell you the max burn speed. If it tells you 40x, then it is the SMART-BURN feature that is lowering the capability.
